I would break things off and say that we each need to go through therapy and be on our own for a while. Please read the handbook. You’re setting yourself up for an emotional entanglement that’s going to HURT badly, as much as you try to rationalize and think you’re both being adult about it. Also limit contact with him and don’t talk every day at the very least right now.

0 to soulmate in every relationship isn't ideal. I hope you take the time to read the handbook and let it sink it especially about how you see yourself and your mentality.

You've known him for ages, have history, he's just getting out of a serious relationship and acknowledges it, your first(?) time not going 0 to 60 and having an open set up, during a pandemic where you're looking for normalcy.... Sounds like you're setting yourself up for an entanglement.

Edit: your last sentence about being afraid to ruin things is 🚩. Ruin what exactly? Your writing should clue you in on your thinking. You're afraid to ruin the chances of being together with him exclusively... What you really want. Have you vetted him? Can't you just offer support as a friend without having sex? Questions I ask myself.
