Alright, found an article: female brown trout don't release their eggs at the same time the male releases his sperm in like half the cases: https://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/female-trout-faking-orgasms-1.338542
I never realized fish "mated". I always though the female just like left her eggs somewhere and some male fish came along later.

I find fish pretty fascinating and hope to keep some soon.
The range of mating methods is extraordinary! Some fish do internal fertilisation, some even incubate the eggs inside them (guppies for example). Some fish find dens or build nests and protect them- in some species the male or female does it alone, in others the pair do it. Some deposit their eggs in a redd (nest scraped out of gravel), some scatter them randomly through gravel or hide them around their environment.
One common feature I've noticed amongst them *all* though, is there is always some strategy by which the females select the best mates.
So yeah, if creatures that typically don't look after their offspring much beyond hatching are being strategic, creatures whose offspring require 18 years or more hard labour should not be settling!
