This is what "confused" me for so long. My ex was not smart, his life was a dumpster fire and he was barely functional some days. Yet his ability to manipulate everyone around him, including successful people, appeared to be effortless second nature.

A former Pickme friend would not stop defending the violent druggie who cheated and tore her self esteem apart because "he's not a bad man, he's just struggling and not getting help. He's not smart enough to be this hurtful on purpose".

Refusing help and being too "stupid" to interact with people without causing them harm makes you a bad person. Manipulation is not intelligence, it's a damaged mind desperately trying to get what it needs from the outside world and failing. That doesn't mean these dudes get a pass, they have more resources than anyone, including doting mothers and girlfriends who beg them do the bare minimum. So they become experts at avoidance, experts at dysfunction.
