I absolutely see your point, but I think if we look at behaviours in the Recency period through the lens of a woman in the 2020's, most relationships would seem vapid and shallow. We value different social postures now. And my, wasn't there an awful lot of posturing?

The one thing I thought the Prince did that was admirable was standing up to the Queen. He accepted Daphne's choice of the Duke graciously.

The character that revolts me is the Viscount. He's such a total shit. Won't do his duty, strings along a woman in love, postures about propriety yet lives a life of abject immoral conduct. Colin was the gem in that lot. I hope we see more of him next series.

From what I gathered from the series, then until a proposal has been made and accepted, both parties are free to court other parties. Like Daphne and the Duke's arrangement; other men could approach her and take her out and it was no problem at all.

The Prince did not really know Daphne at all. He was just smitten by her beauty and nothing more, I think. Also, the Queen ordered him to persue her, yes, and also basically told him that if he wanted a wife from England, then Daphne was the only choice he could make that would be acceptable (for her) - everyone knew the Prince really wanted Daphne from the beginning, but that she had denied him. So I think he hung around with Cressida to have a partner to go on outings and events with. It would probably be embarrassing to him if he were to come alone. Even Cressida's mum told Daphne's mum that she was thankful Daphne didn't want the Prince so her daughter had a chance to make him like her. So maybe she thought that she had a chance to change his mind, but yeah.

To me, the Duke looked like an HVM until he started all that shit with "I love you, but I can't marry you", and then all his secrets and lies and manipulations. Ugh.

I'd like to think that because it's television, a man can change, so that in the end, after he has 'overcome' his traumas and we see him and Daphne being happy together and having a child etc., that he has actually changed for the better and can now completely love her like she deserves. But had it been in real life - hell no.

I think that the focus of the show should rather be to identify the HVW. The men are entitled and can do anything whereas the women are supposed to be submissive (the eldest son becoming head of household instead of the mother, lol) and obedient.

So it is, much like today, much harder for women to stand up and be different and not be as everyone expects them to be, and therefore, I much prefer the strong women in this series that are brave enough to want a different future for themselves, to stand up against the status quo and to challenge the men that try to subdue them.

The Prince character reminded me of Dory from Finding Nemo. I think the Viscount & Duke are debatably worse with the whole push/pull thing, those scenes were so cringe.
