What are your "work rules" or hard lines for your office/workplace?

It took me until very recently to realize that I no longer develop friendships with men at the office to the point where I really never talk to them about non work related things.

I didn’t do this for cool level up reasons. I did it since getting into a relationship with my boyfriend whom I loved very much.

I’m an extrovert and I always make really cool connections with the people I work with / go to school with / generally spend a lot of time around.

It wasn’t until recently that I realized I stopped even talking to men at my work unless necessary because when you give them an inch a lot of them take a mile. It doesn’t matter if they know you have a boyfriend. Lots of times they have wives/gfs. But as a 25 year old woman in a young “start uppy” work place, I realized that a lot of the older men use work as their “escape” from their real lives and will actively flirt or seek emotional relationships with women at their work to feel important.

Not all men do this. Not all men I talk to want to do anything with me. But I can say the second you turn single, it’s like you’re fair game prey.

I have worked late, etc when I needed to complete a project on time, but I have never had a “last minute emergency” with a woman boss. Once men realize you won’t stick around after work last minute (and I literally couldn’t, because I had to get my kids at day care), they become much better at communicating.

This could be anecdotal - but it’s been my experience.

I'm not a big drinker anyway, but I definitely don't drink at work events. The younger people at my office are shockingly sloppy drunks and it's cost some of them their jobs.

I don't make friends at the office either or talk about my personal life with coworkers.

1 - NEVER GET YOUR HONEY WHERE YOU MAKE YOURMONEY. PERIODT.

2 - As women we're burdened to be the social glue that keeps society together. Think about it. I'm positive that all the work potlucks and birthday/holiday celebrations in any office are organized by women. It's a trap. If you want to participate that's fine but I'm not going out of my wth to be the to-go person good that shit. It won't get you promoted and maybe only 1 or 2 of your coworkers will really notice if you're not there anymore. The workplace is a good area to practice your social boundaries bc a FT job means you're spending at least 2,080 hours out of the 8,760 in a year there.

I don't give my age to anyone, not even work friends.

I also never go into specifics about what I think about my coworkers or bosses.

Maybe you've made a friend at work and think you have a confidant. But you never know when you could have a falling out with someone (or worse, they're opportunistic or competitive) and they spill the dirt.

Even the most progressive boss will judge you differently re: promotions, job suitability, etc. if they know your age or some detail they don't agree with. Some might say I should flaunt my age to counter cultural assumptions, but my priority is self-preservation.
