I think there is. I just want to hear your guys thoughts here. To make sure I'm not crazy for thinking this lol.
Because I have a feeling that most people think criminals should only get reform if their victims are male.
When the victim is a man → “It’s tragic but not that serious… the offender deserves empathy, second chances, rehabilitation.”
When the victim is a woman → “Unforgivable. Monster. Lock them up forever.”
Male suffering is socially discounted. Men are expected to be resilient, disposable, or “able to take it,” so harm against them gets framed as less traumatic or less morally urgent.
Empathy gets redirected from victim to offender only when the victim is male. That’s where the misandry creeps in, the man becomes a narrative obstacle instead of a human being.
Even with the two recent ICE shootings. You can still see the gender differences. One narrative is about how it's such an evil act that a woman was killed. And the other narrative is about how a man die a hero for protecting two women against ice. I.E. male disposability and the male protector gender role wrapped into one.
So yeah. if someone says “men getting hurt isn’t a big deal, but women getting hurt is the ultimate evil,” they’re not morally consistent. They’re applying gendered empathy, not justice.
People have a hierarchy when it comes to terrible crimes. I think this is dumb. You don't necessarily need to say that rape is worse than murder (since both are terrible). And even then that's still BS. Because the same people would fantasy about a bad man or a man they don't like being raped in prison, by making drop the soap jokes. So they aren't necessarily against rape per-si. They are just against rape happening to a group they care about.
And again for the main topic of this post. Whether it's murder or rape. They only care about female victims.
You have your FD Signifier types. Who would look you dead in the eye, and tell you that you are some right-wing sicko for wanting to defend yourself against violent intruders trying to break into your house. And I guarantee to you that FD wouldn't have this take if the owner of the home was female.
I know FD Signifier values women life more than men. Because FD once said "Sure as a man I have to worry about violence when leaving my house. But my wife has to worry about both violence and being kidnapped when leaving the house though". And also FD Signifier give two men praise for risking their lives to save a woman in a conversation with PF Jung. Again the idea of society seeing men as protectors that are disposable.
I mentioned FD Signifier here. Because this is the type of mindset certain Leftists are bringing to the concept of prison reform. A mindset where a criminal can do the most heinous things to men. But they will still get a pass though. Because they had a bad childhood or they are a product of their environment.
And yes of course they are going to have more empathy for female criminals. Ironically they just see male criminals attacking men as "boys just being boys". And view female criminals as the victims of patriarchy.
And let's not forget about the attractiveness of the criminal too. If someone like that Luigi guy who killed the CEO. Ends up killing a man who works at a warehouse. Of course they are going to think the good looking criminal can be reform. But they would also scream incel or evil if an unattractive man harmed a woman though.
I know that women have a history of supporting serial killers. But I think this is a bad argument though. Because these women are a very small minority, and they are still considered weirdos or even pick-me's for liking serial killers in society. And also there is barely any data on men being obsessed with female serial killers too, since the media doesn't cover female serial killers (due to misandry, and the "women are wonderful" affect). So you really can't use the "women love serial killers" argument/rebuttal here.
My point here is that for the most part society is going to view a criminal as more evil, if their victim was a woman.
Some activists (not all,m) fall into these traps:
Over-structuralizing male victims (“This harm is just patriarchy hurting itself”, which erases the victim)
Gendered moral absolutism Women = sacred victims Men = abstract social roles
Asymmetric self-defense logic A man defending himself is “violent escalation” A woman defending herself is “empowerment”
When this mindset enters prison reform, it creates exactly what I'm worried about: Crimes against men become “understandable” Crimes against women become “ontological evil”
In conclusion
TLDR: I don't trust certain Leftists when it comes to prison reform.
