Are We Wrong About Prison Rape

This is something I've thought about for a while, the fact that generally, society and average people condone rape so long as it happens within the confines of the prison system. It's abhorrent to me that rape is condoned under any circumstance, but generally, people (at least in the US) believe that those who get raped in prison "had it coming to them" and that they "deserve it" because of the crimes they committed. The error in that line of thinking is that 1) prison should prioritize rehabilitation over vengeance and punishment and 2) the prisoners are already serving their time and being punished for their crime; adding more suffering than necessary, especially sexual assault and/or rape is just sadistic vengeance that's somehow acceptable to most people. I may be more cynical and misanthropic than most, but it sort of proves to me that there is a streak of lust, violence, and evil within people, especially when they are in crowds or in entire societies.

The critic about it being willing is hilarious: if an male inmate can willingly have sex with a female prison guard then a female worker can willingly have sex with her male boss. The power dynamics in the inmate case are far more acute.

There’s something to be said about the assumption of good in females and the assumption of bad in males. That’s the thing that perpetuates this.

Unrelated, but in another sub, someone was upset about being circumcised as a child and I brought up the fact that it is normalized for males but is heavily frowned upon for females. The same is true with SA (although, you could argue that circumcision is a form of SA also).

SA perpetuated toward males isn’t taken seriously, and SA perpetuated toward females is taken incredibly seriously. There is a double standard there, even if people don’t care to acknowledge it.

I forget which comedian it was but his joke on male on male rape went something like this:

"You don't have to drop the soap."

"They're still gonna rape you, dumbass."

I don't know why I never put it all together.

Female staff sexually assaulting criminals. I wasn't expecting that. Do they do it to punish them or are they just bored. Sadly most feminists aren't gonna think top much about this since it happens to female prisoners more. "Women have it worse" is one of the only reasons people ignore men's issues.

That the authors are trying to inflate the prison rape numbers by including willing sex between consenting adults is ridiculous and will undermine future efforts to address the actual problem of prison rape. This study is a farce.
