Here’s a recent thread from r/AskMen that might spark some discussion:
Guys of reddit, what are some things you are expected to do in a relationship but want girls to do more often?
You can click on the link to read the full thread, but below is a quick summary of areas where the men said they feel expected to do the brunt of the work:
- Making the first move.
- Initiating conversations.
- Leading and maintaining conversations.
- Telling jokes.
- Not being boring.
- Being confident.
- Asking out on dates.
- Planning dates.
- Driving.
- Choosing food, movies, etc.
- Paying on dates.
- Communicating directly and explicitly.
- Making them feel wanted.
- Showing sexual interest.
- Giving compliments. (I would add a caveat to this point: I know when I receive compliments, I tend to suspect the complimenter is trying to manipulate me in some way, or just telling me what I want to hear. So admittedly this one is a bit tricky.)
- Initiating physical contact.
- Initiating hugs.
- Initiating kisses.
- Initiating groping.
- Initiating sex.
- Taking control in the bedroom and choosing sexual positions.
- Giving oral sex.
- Being the big spoon.
- Suppressing emotions, staying calm, and keeping the mood positive.
- Comforting and being a shoulder to cry on.
- Encouraging their life goals.
- Obeying lists of chores or unexpected demands.
- Doing "handyman" chores.
- Earning more money.
- Buying gifts.
- Keeping the romance alive.
- Admitting mistakes.
- Apologizing after a quarrel.
- Changing oneself to fit the relationship.
- Putting effort into the relationship overall.
- Being punished for doing any of these things "wrong", despite being the one expected to take the initiative in the first place. I have sometimes heard this dynamic described as "men act, women react" or "men act, women judge".
I have no way of proving how common these dynamics are, but there seems to be a large amount of anecdotal evidence suggesting they are not uncommon. The linked thread had nearly 4000 comments, many of which received hundreds or thousands of upvotes - suggesting lots of men can relate to the gendered expectations being raised, so these are real one-way pressures which many women inflict on men.
I know there are some in the men's movements who oppose discussion of dating issues. Personally I am torn on the issue: I'm pretty sure I want some form of sexual relationship with a woman or women, but I definitely do not want the kind of one-sided relationship outlined above. But I have no idea how we can escape these traditional gender dynamics or if it is even possible. By all accounts, most women are bombarded with sexual attention while most men receive very little, so it seems like men have far less bargaining power, and this seems to be only getting worse in the era of online dating.
What do you think? Do you relate to the above issues? What, if anything, do you think can or should be done to change these dynamics?
