OK, is anyone else bothered by how they are stereotyping the COVID-19 situation as "women are more effective than men"?

  1. That's a very interesting article, thank you for sharing it.

  2. I think affirmative action is a problematic policy, and mostly it's a band aid that is useless if the deeper underlying issues that cause disparities are ignored.

  3. However, when any given institution does decide to adopt an affirmative action policy, then it should work in both directions (in the case of gender) and the goal should be balance, i.e. it should not be the case that 9 women to 1 man is considered a desirable outcome but 9 men to 1 woman as a problem to be corrected. In that regard, the colleges from the article seem to have carried out affirmative action in an equitable way.

  4. This particular article is from 2011, and I'm surprised that it seems like there hasn't been more attention given to this issue. I'd like to see different schools' affirmative action programs studied to see how they treat gender disparities and whether they use a model that simply aims for "more women" or a model that aims for "balance".

While I don’t support AA on principle, AA that automatically goes to the lesser-represented group is better than fixed AA, and it sounds like colleges switched to AA for men at the “appropriate” time.

Still, the problems lie in the pipeline, and admitting under-qualified men at/near the end of it isn’t going to fix them. We need to study and address the real reasons boys are doing worse in schools than girls. That is the only way to equalize educational achievement across gender.

Amazing article from almost a decade ago demonstrates that affirmative action doesn’t work for men either.

Elaborate?

The figures for men are still on the decline despite their efforts. Dealing with symptoms instead of causes never works.

I don't think any group should get AA for college admissions. Ideally nothing but test-scores should be weighed, but nepotism is rampant as well as government programs that discriminate in favor of certain groups.

It was always my understanding that white women were the main benefactors of affirmative action.

AA should really only be for those who can't afford to college. Nothing more.

Affirmative action only succeeds in mismatching applicants with specific institutions. Abolish affirmative action and all quotas, and let people do things for themselves. We don't need big brother dictating to these establishments how many applicants they have, who fall under specific demographics. What's important is for those positions to be occupied by well-qualified individuals.
