I'm 22 and I've struggled with trying to find purpose to life as well. I'm very much into philosophy and spirituality and so my answer will be as such.

I forgot to save this one blog post that made a lot of sense so I'm afraid I can't link it at the moment. The general idea of it was that the idea of trying to find purpose in life is synonymous with finding value in life.

The catch is that life itself is the value. If you focus on being in the present and just enjoying life you will realise that is the purpose of life.

At this moment you have specific conditions and thoughts - 10 seconds from now you will have different thoughts. Each moment is invaluable as it will never be repeated as all the variables (thoughts, environment, etc) keep changing. For example you can only read this post "for the first time" once.

Focus on yourself. Do what makes you happy or what you believe will bring you happiness in the future. Try to really appreciate what life has to offer by being "in the moment". Don't dwell on the past or worry about the "what if's" of the future. That doesn't mean don't reflect or prepare, but understand that the present is the only world that exists; not the past and not the future.

I'm aware this may all sound wacky but hear me out. I'm still trying to find my way but by looking at life this way I feel I've made much progress. Try it out. Good luck!

The army is a job you will either love or hate. There's a reason they make you sign a contract to get in.

If you were American I would advise entering the National Guard. Where unless a conflict broke out you would train and preform limited duties for part of the year in order to see if it was right for you. Then depending on how you enjoyed it you could opt in for a full enlistment.

However I don't know if such a program exists in Romania. Check if your college has army training courses as well.

At some point, at least until your early 30s, this feeling may change in form a little and not subside until you have kids (the desire to reproduce). Be prepared for how to accomplish that without getting screwed over by a woman or the state. Think about surrogacy or a sperm bank to get it out of your system and move on.

When I was your age I felt the same way. My friend and I were contemplating joining the Army. I was jobless and he couldn't stand where he worked. I told him that if I didn't find a job within a month, we would join. Within 3 weeks I found a job. He joined the Army. Over 20 years later, I still regret not joining.

Many men experience the need to be with a group of men where there is a sense of loyalty to each other and a common goal. Comradery is so important. This is why gangs are popular amongst young men. Of course, focusing on being a positive contributor to our society is a better option.

Over time, that feeling subsides. Maybe it's a drop in testosterone or life experience, I'm not sure. Today, being in my 40s, my goal is to build myself an empire. It's about conquest. Mastering oneself and the challenges one faces in business. I like to call it the Sport of Business.

It's a tough choice, joining the Army. If the urge is strong enough and it's there for some time, you should strongly consider it. It's a noble option. Do a few years to see if you'd like to make it a career. If you do 3 years, when you get out, you'll still be 24, which is still very young to make a career change. Actually, it doesn't matter what age you are to make a career change. As you grow older, you have a better understanding of what you like and desire.

You can help way more people through computer science than being in the army. As a soldier you're just a cog in the machine. As a Romanian soldier you are just a cog in a very small machine. Perhaps if you were joining an army that was fighting to free your people from oppressors it might be worth it but as a Romanian soldier you are probably just going to be doing drills and sweeping barracks. If you were a programmer you could make open source software that could change the lives of 100s to billions of people. If that isn't a greater purpose I don't know what is

I feel you. I'm in the application process to join the police service in my city in Canada. I'm tempted to enlist, though. I just want to do something great that will help people. Lately I've had a drive to do something with my life that will leave me satisfied. I love pushing myself, training, and being there when shit hits the fan to solve issues and get things done.

Look at what you're feeling, and why. It's hard, but you'll figure it out. I would listen to your dad. At least reason why he didn't want you to join the army and get an education. At least if you find out why, you can make a better informed decision. Remember, the army owns you once you sign on the dotted line. Just make sure you can handle it.

Above all else, good luck! As you get older you will have a better understanding of who you are and what you want to do :)

Play to your strengths, not your weaknesses.

Your Father represents one hell of an 'in' to the military. And I don't mean as an excuse for nepotism and a well greased way into an easy position. I mean as a wealth of knowledge, experience and opportunity. Contacts, a foot in the door. What you do once you cross that threshold is up to you. Want to be a shitbird who goes on easy street? Or a man of value. A leader of men, someone who makes his mark on history?

Get a degree so you can be an officer. Make it something that can help as the foundation of all the training, experience and seasoning that will come after. International relations, economics, policy making. Keep fit - that will always be the single greatest investment you can make in yourself.
