I don't understand, I lived in a relatively "dangerous" city for 6 years. I had rules that I followed.

Don't get completely fuckin' drunk if I was going to be out alone.
Don't be alone if around closing.
If it is a week night or night when a lot of other people weren't out don't be out later than the crowds.

These children need to grow to and interact with the world like adults

The relevant bit is as follows: while her pal Alan jumped in the car and began scouring the streets looking for her.

So the only person to take practical action to help her out (whether it was necessary or not) was a guy. I'll take a punt that none of her female friends thought to get off their arse and help and I'll also guess that Alan didn't get any magical vagina for his valiant white knighting efforts.
