Graduated from a lower tier university with a BS in CS and minor in Math with honors, and guess what nobody cares about my grades or minor. Took me about 6 months to get a job working for a indian software bodyshop and now 10 months later I'm back to unemployment.

Yes. Got an Engineering degree and I'm getting rejected by graduate/entry level roles as if I just got out of highschool and applying to CEO roles immediately. All this STEM shit is overrated. I should've done an electrician or plumbing course .

I know a guy or two that had the same issue. Especially right now, it comes down to experience and companies aren't willing to put in the effort in to train you. Since you are fresh from college hiring managers know there is going to be work up front for them to get you productive. they rather higher someone who can come in up and running.

Might I suggest looking for contract work or internships? This will allow you to build some work experience without having companies take a risk on you. After that you will be sure to find something.

The two guys I know that had this problem eventually did find something, and I think one of them works for one of the big guys in tech. So be willing to take on work other than full time is my advice.

Graduated with a PhD in physics a year and a half ago with a focus on mathematical/computational approaches to biology/neuroscience and extensive research into neural networks. From a very top tier university/program. Despite applying like crazy to every possible job from finance to tech to biotech to medicine, I still can't get a single interview. I gave up on applying a couple months ago. Planning on going into a trade or becoming a pilot now.

I have a friend who I taught programming (he had technical university background), so I have a view on how the job hunting is looking in Poland for fresh web developers. Not too great.

You need a lot of work to succeed - the demand is true, but it is for more experienced developers. Juniors and interns are in vast amounts, so as one you need to stand out as much as you can if you want to get job. Degree only will not get you far.

Do a lot of smaller projects to present your knowledge, read and learn a lot. Constantly. You need to have a lot of knowledge as junior, because there is a lot of other people trying to stand out. The guy I taught didn't learn enough in his free time.

That friend spent around a year looking for his first job. Now due to covid he will lose it shortly unfortunately, but the experience will help him find another one, but the time is now very tought for less experienced people.

After graduations from a stem field in computers I had to take a job that paid the minimum. I'm talking about $12.50 an hour and I had a Bachelors of science. Had 2 years of that and moved onto something way better. I think the entry level positions making 70k a year for entry level are not really entry level jobs. They actually want you to have work experience.

About to graduate for engineering (presented my thesis today). Hopefully government jobs are still viable (so long as I get enough money for myself, I'm good), especially for military or contracting.

The software engineering market is relatively shitty right now but still better than most industries. Earlier today the creme de la creme company (in terms of historical prestige/exclusivity), Airbnb, laid off a quarter of its staff. I doubt any tech company can hide from these conditions on a long term basis - if they persist through the end of the year, I'd imagine even the cush employers like Google will start layoffs.

And yes, the market has always been difficult for new grads without any internships that demonstrate some real programming experience. I doubt that will change.

Did a diploma program at a tech school in Canada in engineering. Was off Toa. Decent start... Had a slow patch I survived and then went to oil and gas. Had a few good years making over the 6 figure mark especially with ivertime then 90% of my co-workers (we were at 400 in our department at peak)got laid off before I finally did. A few months later took a survival job at school board as a 'junior drafter' for a year before getting back into oil and gas... But at the time couldn't even give me any raise making the move... So still was making 30% less than before.

Many others 30-40% less who has been rehired and a few Lucky ones that never got laid off. I was told I'd get bumped up asap when I signed... Only got a single 3% raise before we got a little slow and then a takeover so that froze us... Now of course everyone having projects cancelled or on hold... Lucky to have a job... My buddies in town taking cuts... Somehow I actually got another 3% raise just a fee weeks ago.. dunno how. Inguess the fact myself and two people in instrumentation did good work with another US office and our nearly 2 year relationship is still going and one of fee bright spots. But yeah everyone in whole industry still worried.

Now this all may sound great but reality is most of us in industry feel it will never be the same . A huge chunk of our country wants it to stay in the ground . We are all asking if we need to go back to school or what. Very few people in other industries will even consider hiring o&g guys. Big stigma that we will just follow the money. I'm worried if I can't keep going because I'm gonna be left with that much after this divorce... Will have to pay support and have part time custody and can't see myself going back to school

I'll tell what's happening in It right now in US tech sector. The US companies that have seen an IT boom but now have become stagnant, very low amount of innovation, are resorting to cutting down the operational costs. Which means layoffs in the home countries and outsourcing to off shore.

In in India, and I got a job immediately after graduation in the Indian (outsourcing) branch of a US company as a Software Developer. While it does give me stable source of income very early in my career, I don't like outsourcing for cutting down costs to maintain an illusion of profit.

Basically, most of the development work has now been shifted to India. I do the same amount of work as an American would have done, with the same enthusiasm and passion. But, I get paid way extremely shitty salary compared to Americans because of cost of living in lower in India. Now money I'm okay with. What I'm bothered by is the absolute lack of infrastructure and perks compared to US offices and the typical left wing silicon valley propaganda.

It benefits us as more Indians are getting jobs. But at the same time it makes me sad that Americans are losing jobs. If rather have a company move me to the US and offer me a job there than give me some outsourced job. I need validation for my skills and talent, something like "We value you talent and work, so we'll go through the extra effort of immigrating you, paying for your Visa, da the same money as another citizen of our country". Giving me this outsourced job is like saying, "We only hired you because you can do the same work and you're fucking cheap". Its not good for my self-esteem, and I'm planning to move out as soon as this Coronavirus shit and the subsequent depression is over with.

Got a degree in STEM (EE) back in the late 80's. Couldn't find work for two years. Tried an MBA program but more education and more debt was getting to me, so I joined the Army. Got my commission, put in three years and got a job with a small, low-voltage contractor. After a few years, became part owner. Maybe not the inspirational story you want, but a STEM degree isn't always a ticket to the stars. You have to keep plugging along.

Seriously guys, if you are young get the idea out of your head that "I want to live in X city"

Take a job at a bottling plant in Alabama.

Learn PLC's and go to literally any industrial plant in the US.

If you are going your own way, GO YOUR OWN WAY.

You don't sit around waiting for a job, you go where the work is.

got my associates in computer programming. It took me several years to get my foot in the door. started out at 47k in my home state and had to look else where to find better opportunities.

Welcome to the struggle. Skipped the degree and did training and job experience. It gets easier as you get older - they take people in their late 20s and 30s more seriously than recent grads. Keep grinding.
