I've always been told that dating coworkers is a huge no-no. The hypocrisy of our culture where phrases like "don't shit where you eat" and "don't dip your pen in company ink" are still being tossed around, yet such a huge portion of relationships form at the workplace anyway, is just astounding.
Do people only give that kind of advice to trick meeker, more literal-minded people out of the workplace dating pool? Or is it just something people say to feel like they're enforcing the "rules" of life while breaking those rules at the same time?

The work place was the second most common place to meet your future spouse in the 90s. Now it's 4th.
The internet happened in the late 90s and it has affected our lives dramatically.

Anyone working full-time spends 25% or more of their week at work and 25% or more of their week sleeping. Keep this in mind.
Also, outside of work you may work out, so shopping, bars, do sports, but most of those you interact with smaller groups of people, and for shorter periods of time, and these people may change up often. Its very similar to how socializing and making friends when in school is easier. You spend a lot of time with them, you see them often and routinely, and you share something in common that leads you to talk to each other.
Flip side: Couples in relationships often discuss things about work that they shouldn't have because of boundaries set by their positions. Or if one is a higher up position, will they be giving "special treatment" to their partner in the work place. What if they break up? Will the lower position and/or women claim sexual harassment and was promised a better position by sleeping with the boss? What if one person is a terrible employee and we fire them; will their partner {who still works for us} have a vendetta against us?
Companies thrive on secrets... From company secrets, to company politics, to keeping employees pay secret. Inter-work relations threaten this and can have devastating impacts, even legally. Its a bigger concern the higher up the position one or both people are

What people don't realize is that (based upon some knowledge I have) this thing spontaneously grew from a troll campaign against some feminist comments.

Actually, let me clarify. What happened was some people got pissed about something off-handedly said by another person in another forum criticizing Hillary Clinton's response to the Weinstein accusations.
She was late in responding to the accusations, because she had gotten more campaign contributions from Weinstein than Chuck Shumer, who responded to the accusations almost immediately.
From this, a commenter complained about her "me-tooism." And then the thing appeared to take off from there. I witnessed this thing happen, but I can't say where without possibly doxxing innocent people.
It was downvoted into oblivion. It might have been removed by now, I don't know.
Congratulations ladies, you exposed the handful of actual creeps in Hollywood (a liberal/progressive bastion), then left the floodgates open for accusations against any man to go forward with the strength of a court conviction behind them.
Congratulations for creating a modern witch hunt that'll effectively hobble the male support structure that you all need in order to have careers. Oh, you'll ruin our lives, but they only reason you'll stop is because it might, in some small way, affect your life tangentially.
I'm glad for you, I really am, because now you'll have to actually work for a living, since no man is going to give you the benefit of the doubt or allow you a pass because you're a woman; you're in the BIG leagues now, so don't be surprised if the agents don't have as many offers for you as they did. If they're going to come forward, they should do so without delay, so that evidence can be gathered and a legal prosecution prepared. We have courts established for this purpose.
This spate of accusations for events alleged to have happened 20 years ago is supported only by social media, not the courts. It's libel, slander, character assassination of the worst sort, enabled by "listen and believe" rhetoric that renders the accused guilty until proven innocent. In a court of public opinion that's taken on the assumptions of Title IX. Combined with false rape accusations being so prevalent, the MeToo campaign is almost certain to include some innocent men. That kind of collateral damage should be unacceptable.
