I never learned to read or write Cantonese or Mandarin. I learned the bad words as a kid when he would hammer a finger or stub his toe. I picked up on a little more as I got older. I do regret not learning to speak it fluently when I had the chance.

Thanks. I am working on it, albeit slowly. My dad is just awesome at languages. He's fluent in Cantonese, Mandarin, and several other dialects. I am real good at faking his accent though,I mean if that counts on some level.

Utopian pacifism is an ideology that can be held by someone who has no understanding of, or respect for history and human nature.

Humanity has literally grown and survived this far by fucking and killing and people are now saying "alright, guys, let's cut this shit out and change everything! Pivot!" Sadly for them, nature does not work like that. Luckily for the human race nature has no pity or worry. These people will die out and/or be conquered by a stronger more brutal specimens.

Yea, oddly enough, I just got sucked into a semi-fringe thread over on 8ch last night.
Thomas More and Utopia (his book) got a lot of call outs for being the progenitor of all the communistic crap we see today. Of course, Catholic church was being called out, but alot of this ideology goes way back...

Thomas More
Sir Thomas More (; 7 February 1478 – 6 July 1535), venerated in Catholicism as Saint Thomas More, was an English lawyer, social philosopher, author, statesman, and noted Renaissance humanist. He was also a councillor to Henry VIII, and Lord High Chancellor of England from October 1529 to 16 May 1532. He wrote Utopia, published in 1516, about the political system of an imaginary, ideal island nation.
More opposed the Protestant Reformation, in particular the theology of Martin Luther and William Tyndale.
Utopia (book)
Utopia (Libellus vere aureus, nec minus salutaris quam festivus, de optimo rei publicae statu deque nova insula Utopia) is a work of fiction and socio-political satire by Thomas More (1478–1535) published in 1516 in Latin. The book is a frame narrative primarily depicting a fictional island society and its religious, social and political customs. Many aspects of More's description of Utopia are reminiscent of life in monasteries.

I'd point out that most of these people live in cities and, at least here, actively avoid the multiculturalism they preach. A black guy heading downtown in our local liberal hotbed is guaranteed to get hassled by the cops. Despite the massive art deco homeless shelter, the homeless actually get one way bus tickets south when the cops get them. All that to say that the people pushing this stuff act in exactly the opposite manner day to day.

I think a lot of Christian missionaries would fall into the same or a similar category.
On my plane ride back from a trip to Brazil, there were about 20 people from this church group, mostly late teens and early 20s, with their parents and church leaders. They all had shirts saying "Mission: Brazil". Something really rubbed me the wrong way about them. Like you knuckleheads think you really have anything to offer the people of Brazil? It's mostly a vacation for them, a "learning experience", something to make them feel good about themselves, rather than actually helping anyone.
[+][deleted] 8 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link
[–]anchoviesareok26 points27 points28 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yeah you realize how silly the whole thing is when you do the math on the amount of money spent. I agree with you, why not just send them a check? It would save a lot of time and bullshit.
This type of work is really for the benefit of the people going over there. It's an "enlightening" experience for them. The poor folks they're "helping" are more like characters in a movie, they give it an objective, depth. But at the end of the day the mission folks are the stars and when they get back, it's about how they've grown as a person.
I'm convinced most trips to help people are bullshit, vacations with a sense of superiority.
I would love to hear from one of the "savages" from these countries and what they think of this revolving door of random western people coming and leaving every week.
[–][deleted] 8 points9 points10 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
For what it's worth, there's a big backlash against short-term missions in many churches as they are waking up to the many ways they do more harm than good. See for example, When Helping Hurts.
[–]redpickaxe21 points22 points23 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I hate missionaries. They are condescending and offer backward superstitions and ignorance.
Of course sending "money" is pretty pointless as well...
And contrary to propaganda like Family Guy claims, you can bet that not a single cent stolen by African scammers ever goes to improving the livelihood of the scammer's civilian community.

I feel you, dude. I do respect their lack of fear though, even if it's through ignorance. Church groups will trust the lord and walk straight into a pile of shit. My great-grandparents were under house arrest (yeah, they got off easy) for 5 years during China's commie revolution. They could have dipped early on, but their trust in the lord gave them super saiyan, seemingly "idgaf" balls . Their % is about average for a country of their size. You'd naturally expect a large country to produce more. Them having only twice as much as the US despite having about 4 times the population doesn't speak very well for them.
[–]daisyj60 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You also forget that China is still a DEVELOPING country. They have always relied on coal because it's cheap, and just not too long ago they finally got the money to implement ideas to rapidly improve infrastructure, funding for technological/scientific advancements, invest in renewable energy projects etc.. Also people there don't earn an average 40k a year (or equivalent) like the majority of US do. There are still many poor people who are not contributing much to the overall pollution and thus giving China a 3 times less carbon emission per capita than the US.
Please don't have this view that development happens overnight. It took US three centuries to stand where they are now-- they also experienced heavy pollution during the time of industrialization. And China obviously lagged behind because of Mao.

Useful idiot
A useful idiot (also useful fool, Russian: Полезный идиот) is "a dupe of the Communists", usually a citizen of a non-communist country sympathetic to the Soviet Union who is susceptible to propaganda and is cynically misused. The phrase was used by Soviet communists and the KGB to refer to persons in the West their country had successfully manipulated. The phrase is often attributed to Vladimir Lenin, but it remains controversial whether he used this term in his publications.

As a Russian living in the states now, the way I see it here is that things are exactly the same as they are in any other corrupt society but there is a level of distance between what is happening and the people. This level is called the justice system.
Here are some examples:
In Russia I drive down the street at high speed. Officer pulls me over and either gives me a fine or more likely tries to extort me for money. I give the officer the money and drive off. There is no consequences to me beyond this. In America when you get pulled over you receive a ticket. This means nothing yet. You can pay this ticket and have your insurance go up, so this path is unwise. Instead you either go to court or pay a lawyer to do this for you. At the court an officer will offer you a "plea bargain" meaning that by paying a fee - official bribe - you can have this whole incident removed from your record. Oops, looks like you got a very expensive parking ticket! Bad boy!
People think that the law here in the States is there to protect them. But that is not the case. There are so many laws on the books that almost nobody knows what is actually legal to do sometimes. I used to write a column for my school on "funny laws" from various states. It made me realize that if they want to book you for something all they need to do is watch you for one day and you'll be spending at least the next week in jail.
All of the lawyers, judges, and officers in your town are probably good friends. A friend of mine once told me the story of his good buddy's divorce. The dude had a lot of money and the lawyers on both sides were best friends. They realized that it was in their best interest to play the couple against each other. At the end of an extremely messy divorce neither side ended up with anything of value and the lawyers had made tends of thousands off the whole ordeal.
In some countries when the local government thugs - sometimes called police in some countries - break down your door in the middle of the night don't need a reason to beat the shit out of you and throw you in a cell. Here in the states the system is designed to have a reason. They can write up a piece of paper to put you away no matter how clean you think that you are. Look through your contracts that you have signed. You probably don't even have any rights to half the shit you own or do.
Honestly sometimes I miss the Russian way. At least there when they fuck you they just come out and tell you "alright buddy, spread them, you're about to get fucked." Here there is all these games and ceremony involved. But at the end of the day you still get fucked either way.
Look at all of this shit we are seeing now in Hollywood. And remember back to the PizzaGate scandal of a few years back. Sick shit is happening behind closed doors and everyone is in on it. But nobody says a word. Just do as you are told and nothing bad happens. In some countries people's kids are stolen directly from their homes under the gun. Here it has to be done through paperwork.
On the specific topic of executing minorities for organs, I am sure it happens here too. How often do we hear of corruption in jails where there is so much incentive in keeping them full at all times for maximum monetary gains. I've read of cases where funeral homes were caught not cremating people and giving people fake ashes and then profiting from reselling body parts.
Everything here is done behind closed doors, beyond many curtains, and behind layers upon layers of theater, protocol and stagecraft. If you follow the ceremony and stick to the scripts you will be OK so long as you remain useful.
See, now I am starting to sound like some conspiracy nut. I'm putting down the whisky and going to bed.
[–]mico_seven5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
That is all true. But there was once a country called England where there was real law. Then the original baizuo revolted and the immigrants came.

The word baizuo is, according to political scientist Zhang Chenchen, a Chinese word that ridicules Western "liberal elites". He further defined the word "baizuo" with the definition "People who only care about topics such as immigration, minorities, LGBT and the environment" and "have no sense of real problems in the real world".[8] The term has been used also been used to refer to perceived double standards of the Western media, especially the alleged bias on reporting about islamist attacks in Xinjang.

Communism has never made more sense than it did right there..
The Chinese have nailed it. I wonder if they still have those "Re-Education Camps"? Many we can send over all our baizuos to enroll.
I like this term. Chinese are heavy-hitters, they don't have time for BS.
Communist indoctrination prepared everyone to be good little autocrats and make millions they can't use anywhere except outside of China.
But, like many Asian people, the Chinese have a sense of humor tempered by hard experience and a well-tuned sense of what they can get away with.
Many Americans have lost their moorings, and have become rapidly untethered from reality. Seriously, life doesn't need to have the hoops we built for ourselves to jump through.
