Definitely built your own. Custom hardware and no bloatware to slow it down. I prefer Linux, but Windows is more user friendly. AMD Ryzen processor or Intel Core I7. Any motherboard that is compatible with processor you choose is fine, but make sure it has at least 4 memory slots, 4 PCI-E(2 or more PCI-E 16X) slots, 4 or more SATA2 slots, more memory is always preferable, the largest capacity solid state hard(not hybrid) drive you can afford, an AMD Radeon RX Series or nVidia GeForce GTX 1080TI(both hard to find because of cryptocurrency mining) video cards, and lastly an EVGA Gold or Platinum modular power supply(800 watts or more).

If you exclude peripherals (monitor, keyboard etc) you can build a kick ass desktop for sub $1k.

Custom computer builder here: you’ll get more bang from your buck with a desktop but building your own isn’t for everyone. OriginPC if you have the $. HP elite books are a good choice too.

Do your homework, plenty of garbage out there.

Desktop for sure. If you are buying for gaming, but you don't know much about computers, you can buy a pre built rig. I bought a little i5 Dell 3847 instead of a console, such a better decision. Drop some money on a badass PC and have one hell of a gaming man cave. Doesn't mean you cant lift and do outdoor shit too.

I've been around in pc since vic 20 and tandy 80 and 386

I've built my own several times, and bought a few.

I don't game much and I tend to rock low end pcs or still use pc's past their prime.

I can say this. I got lazy.

I bought a Dell Insiron and upgraded it.

This is what I got for $1099 at best buy (caught it on sale)

Amd Ryzen 7 1800x 16gb ram radeon fx 580 256gb ssd 1 tb HD

I think this was a good deal for the buck as I didn't really want to build another and all the parts research i did came out to similar or higher prices.

I took the lazy road. I don't even like best buy.

I have also done the E-bay, cheap desktop special. Which I am typing on right now.

Hp 8200 Elite i-5 $150 Nvidia 750 2-4 gb card $150 Samsung Evo 500gb ssd drive $150 32GB of ram (specs say it can take it, and it can take it if you buy the right ram) $200

Total $650 for a machine that would play fallout 4 better than my i5 940m laptop.

It is my living room game console/movie/kodi/netflix chill and read reddit machine. The monitor is my TV. I use it from the couch.

If your looking for a project and to be frustrated a bit before your computer works, the go for the built, you get much more for your money.

However, with the cost of processors and the insane costs of video cards, I opted out and grabbed a shelf model.

Yep, I'm getting old. And windows already zonked out on me once and caused me a nightmare, but it still works now.

Now to give you my suggestion.

You want at LEAST and i-5, or Amd Ryzen processor, best is i7 and 1800 The i5 will hold on for years and the 7 probably twice that.

You want 16gb of ram. If you find a deal on a computer with 8gb , dont worry, just look up, buy, and pop another chip in.

You want and SSD drive , even if its only 128mb. Its super fast. The trend now is to used the 128 as the super fast boot and OS drive, and everything else goes on an old fashion 1tb hard drive

You want a vr grafix card. if your not gung-ho, and are okay with playing games on medium and only have 1 4k monitor, but want to have multiple monitors, then you need a mid range or higher.

Amd radeon fx 580 or higher, Nvidia 1060 or higher. These cards are roughly the same and can handle vr.

I built my own back in 2013. Done a handful of upgrades here and there and replaced a bad HDD about a year go. Still rock solid and I'm still very happy with it. It'll play most games on high settings still and never slows down, chugs or freezes doing anything else at all.

It's actually really simple to build your own. Probably the most complicated part is picking out the parts you want and finding the right price. Everything else is quite easy to do. At your most basic, you'll need a case, power supply, motherboard, CPU [central processing unit], HDD or SSD, a couple RAM modules, and a discrete GPU if you want to play games. Could also get a disc drive if you still find yourself using a lot of discs and there are a hell of a lot of peripherals to choose from. Buying anything prebuilt will be more expensive than building it yourself unless you're really busy and don't have the time. Building your own can get very expensive too depending on your needs and what all you want out of it. Barring all peripherals [mouse, keyboard, monitor, controllers, etc.] and extras you can build a pretty nice rig that'll survive a while for ~1000$. If you're not concerned about gaming and all of the fancy stuff, you can quite easily build a rock-solid general use work/media center/browsing computer for 400-500$. Even cheaper if you can find decent refurb deals or scrounge up some used parts.

I highly recommend Carey Holzman's videos on YouTube if you're new to the PC game. Very, very helpful and he gives clear demonstrations and explanations of every single step and often goes into how to pick out parts and gives interesting facts. He also dispels some long-lived myths about computers and computer parts.

Build your own. I bought mine 2 years ago, with stuff that was released a little while before so It was a bit cheaper. I don't play new games, the newest is BF1. If you wanna play newest games, invest in a stronger one. If you are like me and you wanna play games such as Wow, CSGo, BF 1 etc, just go for a decent specced machine that is a bit outdated.

If you're going to use it long term for gaming definitely go with a custom as it'll be cheaper in the long run. This year I just dropped 3k on a new set up but my previous one has kept me going for a good 7 years with not a lot of maintenance.

If you're just wanting a utility machine I'd but a decent laptop. You can always hook it up to a monitor and play a fair amount of mid-level games on it.

Well, if all you wanna do is play some RTS, a Ryzen 3 2200G + RX 560/570 should be good enough. Buy atleast 16 gigs of DDR4 RAM. If you can't spend a lot on SSD, then buy a SSHD + HDD combo. SSHD offer a lot of storage with much better r/w speeds than a HDD. In case you are confused whether certain parts are compatible or not, PCPartPicker is your friend :)
