Even with electric shavers, you’ll still get them. I have a Wahl trimmer and a good old fashioned Norelco. You still get those annoying in-grown hairs. It doesn’t matter. Irritating the old skin around the neck causes it anyways. The best shave I ever got was at a barber using the traditional razor blade, and I still got in-grown neck hairs a day later even after the natural moisturizer he put on my neck and face. So I’ve just come to embrace the fact that in-grown hairs are the price you pay to look well groomed.

Do you have oily skin? I used to have ingrown hairs myself, so I switched from shaving cream to Ivory Soap, and this made the ingrown hair issue largely go away. I have oily skin, so I've never had to shun the moisturizers -- makes the zits come alive.

My general attitude is, 'Fuck shaving.' I'm a genetic anomaly that grows facial hair at ridiculous speed. Nowadays I run a beard/facial hair trimmer once per week and call it good. Stupid fashion trends come and go ('beards are in! beards are out! I don't give a shit either way!'), but never again wasting time every day shaving to impress people I don't give a shit about - - - priceless. Ex-wife preferred me to be close shaved, reason enough to do the opposite LOL, but mostly it's just laziness and/or better, more efficient use of time.
That said, I'll come back here later (when less caffeinated and less in a rush) to read some of these comments, since it looks like some good content in the comments; maybe for some bizarre reason I'll feel like I need to be close shaven for some weird future event (??), so maybe I should know something about how to do that.

The last couple of years, I've had a beard from Fall into Spring. I'm wearing one now. I live down South, so it's a function of heat as to whether I have one or not. If I lived further up North, I'd likely have a beard year-round. I tended to do the opposite on women's wishes as goes beards, back in the day.

Skin grease is the hardest thing to wash off. Even Ivory is far from a perfect solution, but I have yet to find a better soap to do the job. The scouring types of soaps irritate the skin, yet leave the oil.

Besides that saying: I grow a beard, because I like it. Not because it gives me a more manly look it's similar like what women will say that they don't use make-up to impress men, but because they feel more comfortable in their own skin. Like many others before you: what they say is the opposite of they really mean. I like to go the gym, so one day I will be stronger than my stepdad and my own father. Also I like working out. And people seeing my progress is also a motivational part of it (impressing women has a really huge motivational boost). At least i'm not lying, we have multiple motivations why we do something. It's not black and white, but there is a huge part of people with beards they like the attention from others. I really don't mind that, a majestic beard is really cool. I just hate people who lie.

Hair grows but not going to the barber it will grow to an ugly haircut. With a beard you have to wash it, groom it and trim it to have a good looking beard. It just grows but than you will look like Santa Claus. And I've met only one guy that has that kind of beard, my uncle. He truly let it grows. On the street I've never seen one.

Maybe you're partly right that it gets annoying and people will trim it. There is also a few I've met who truly don't care (2 people). Maybe i'm wrong about this subject, but for me I feel there is a huge group that does it for the looks and the status. I've seen many hipsters with beards and tattoo's and they act like they are strong. But I can see they are no fighters. Based on my experience with kickboxing their ego's will be shattered in an instant.

Oh there are probably more who grow it for looks (that's why I edited my last post and said "men who don't give a fuck") but what I'm saying is that some men actually don't give a fuck. I know a lot of times I won't cut mine until my mustache gets at the edges of my mouth and it feels like I'm eating hair and that's when I'll cut it all. If you look at a guy and his beard is partially grown out but it's not styled at all, then he probably just cuts it because he has to in order for it not to get too long and annoying. If you see one that looks like its trimmed in a certain manner then yeah maybe its styled and he cares about his looks.
