I disagree with just about everything you've said. The distinction you make between 'old-fashioned sports' and bodybuilding is arbitrary and seems to be based on high level competitors, of which most people lifting weights at the gym are not.

The reality is that unless you're training for the 5000 metres, virtually any athletic pursuit will include some resistance training. You make some vague points about vanity and women, insert them in between some scare stories from online communities about potential injury (a part of any physical activity), and somehow conclude that bodybuilding (i.e. a form of exercise) has no health benefits.

Your post is a great example of 'garbage in' leading to 'garbage out'. If you're interested, there are plenty of journal articles out there on the benefits of resistance exercise, adequate protein for recovery etc.. If you like, we can talk about the benefits and risks of different forms of exercise, but the effort would likely be wasted as we'd be going off your incoherent starting point.

The most healthy and performant bodies are not of the bodybuilding type. Function and performance over pop aesthetics always. If you are going to do lifting then go for lifting as much as possible(powerlifting,weightlifting) and/or gymnastics(rings,bars). It's also important to do cardio for the heart and the proven benefits it has for mental health.

Don't believe the hype. All lifting will take a toll on your body. Lifting heavy is hard on a heart that isn't in shape. Injury and health problems will happen to you if you just lift bro instead of doing a proper routine of correct form, eating, rest and regular doctor visits to monitor developing problems. It might very well happen anyway, but doing it without taking every precaution is just running off a cliff.

I agree with most other comments rebutting your post, You made a couple of misconceptions and issues here, the first being, there is a huge difference from doing any athletic endeavor to compete as opposed to doing athletics for fitness. Example, in lifting competitions you do things that allow you to lift the absolute maximum weight such as rounding back on dead lifts, or letting the knee go over the toe on olympic weightlifting, these are both things you would make sure to avoid if lifting for fitness but when competing your goal is to win so at times you make some risks with your health, Same can be said for elite mountain bikers, hurtling over a 20 meter cliff on a bike is quite risky but not going for a cycle around your local park. So your argument that sports has lesser risk is not true

Some aspects of bodybuilding are not the greatest, but there is NOTHING wrong with resistance training, competitions and feats of strength have been a part of humanity for as long as we have existed, there is much evidence from texts, tales, illustrations and more recently video, and accounts in many religions of extreme strength, (eg samson in the bible)

this is complete bullshit to be frank. natural bobybuilding will make sure your bones are strong as you get into old age, it will keep joints strong, it will increase both growth hormon as well as testosterone, which both contributes to your wellbeing. try not to compare people that shoot unreal amounts of steoroids into themselves with regular gym goers. it should be very evidentent that working out is actually super healthy if you look at people that are now old and have done it their entire life. No excuse, start lifting and see the benefits.

Every time this pops up I cannot help but notice that OP always ALWAYS confuses working out to stay in shape and healthy with professional bodybuilding. I have yet to see anyone actually tell men to get into bodybuilding.

If you cannot tell the difference, you need to shut up and educate yourself. I lift. I'm not a bodybuilder. I do it to stay in shape, to have the strength to defend myself easier, and it damn it feels good.

There's a big difference between body building and lifting a few times a week. Lifting a few times a week is a great way to keep your bones and ligaments healthy, making you less prone to injury. And the benfits of cardio are too many to list here.

I agree that present-day bodybuilding with its excess protein and drugs is unhealthy. But there's nothing wrong with resistance training if done properly.
I agree that many people lift in order to attract pussy. That is very dangerous, especially since those lifters focus on chest, abs, arms and neglect legs and lower back (where true strength is generated). But there's nothing wrong with lifting if it's done properly.

There are a lot ideas your post, it's hard to not get confused after reading it. First, there are many modalities of weight training. Some are more 'aggressive' than others. Bodybuilding is very different from say power-lifting. Second, you are making an argument from the extreme. I agree that if take weightlifting or bodybuilding to the extreme in a kind of 'cult' mentality, there will be a high price to pay in health terms.

Take it easy, be psychically active (could simple things like going to the grocery store riding your bicycle or taking the stairways some other day, for example), eat/sleep well, don't marry, reserve a time to do nothing, take care of your appearance/hygiene and you'll be fine :)

I think you're right. It's the last thing you'd imagine Jesus or Buddha or Aurelius or Tesla or Newton recommending other men do. There are far more important matters. The only exercise I do is what naturally falls in line with my everyday duties and that's about an hour of daily walking. It's enough. It's clear from the comments you're hurting a lot of egos but that perhaps only proves your point. Increasingly it seems like speaking plain truth these days an act of martyrdom, even on this subreddit.
