So 22k total debt? Dude that's nearly nothing. I didn't graduate high school and I would be able to pay that off in like 5 years working full time easy.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and guess that you'll be making more than 15 or 20 an hour.

If you can, live with your parents for as long as you possibly can. I know it sucks but your better off getting rid of that debt early than paying it off over 10-20 years because the interest is gonna fuck you (Its literally designed to). Find a male roommate online so you save 50% on rent I know it can be risky living with a stranger but most likely it'll be worth it. Good luck

For the most part, if you are smart enough to do BME, you can hack EE or CS, both of which pay better with more job prospects. ChemE is also a better option. The only reason to do BME is if you want to do a PhD or MD/PhD. Most engineering schools let you switch your major within the first 2 years because the first year is almost universally weeder classes: math (higher level calc, linear algebra, etc), engineering physics (brutal), some basic programming classes. Is engineering worth 5.5k per debt per year? Absolutely. Even Civil, Industrial, or Environmental is worth it.

If you don't want to do trades or professional degree (MD, DDS, JD, PharmD, PhD Chemistry/Physics/Biochem etc), it's really the only thing worth going to college for.

As for increasing your salary if you're stuck on BME, it really depends on where in which country (or in the US, which state) you end up in and what company you join. Expect to start somewhere around 60, less if you stick to research, with 3-10% increases yearly till you level off at 100k with an undergrad degree. The fastest way to increase your salary is to play the switch jobs every 2-3 years game and them jump into a management role.

I chose to go to medschool after several years of dicking around. I do ok, think low to mid 6 figures. Who knows when the gravy train runs out.

Hey man I’ve heard biomed really ends up pigeon holding you into one area. Thought of electrical engineering? Definitely get more options and you can still apply for biomed jobs. At least that’s what I’ve been told.

Biomedical Engineering pays good and is in big demand. When you can, search on www.usajobs.gov Just live below your means, minimize and pay off your debt ASAP. Then stay debt-free, avoid getting married and invest wisely. No problem. Sounds like a bright future to me.

If you are in the US, check if you qualify for a Pell Grant, or any other non traditional scholarship.

Also, apply for undergrad jobs within your faculty. Many colleges pay a low wage, but will heavily discount or wave tuition fees for classes that fall under your school.

Also, if you are good at Math/Physics, there is always demand for private tutoring.

Biomed is a challenging degree, from the point of view that the whole industry underpays. Consider what parts of the major you truly enjoy, and decide if maybe Mechanical, Chemical, Computer, Electrical/Electronic engineering would suite you best (they are significantly better paid).

Dude, chill. You're taking out a loan for $22k. This is less than most cars cost. You'll be fine.
Now if it was 100k, we would have a different talk. But 22k is chump change. Especially for your major.

$22k today? Meh as long as you don't incur other debts like big mortgage, car etc you should be fine. I'd point out there two sides to debt reduction equation expenses which is discussed in this thread. Also there is income. You could do some sort of PT or contract work, some from home and wipe it out in a year or two.

At your stage in life I'd suggest renting. Because that will give you more flexibility to move quickly to obtain new work for higher pay. Will you regret majoring in it? I dunno. You won't know till later. Do you like the work, do you have a reasonable expectation of getting a decent paycheck? If the answer is yes then great if not then maybe keep looking for your thing. Also later after 5, 10 or 20 years that isn't for you. If you stay keeping your debts down and have assets like stocks, bonds, gold, silver, crypto etc then you can make a 30s to midlife pivot shift.

The future is yours for the taking. You gotta plan for it not worry about it.

You can find a side hustle to pay that off. Whatever other skills you have, you can make money in it. Whatever skill you don't have, you can invest into it to get better. Every man should have at least 2 marketable skills.
