I prefer to lead conversations and not follow them.

I only follow when it comes to close friends. At work, if a conversation goes somewhere unpleasant, I change its course or leave.

I think its a nice gesture to your Buddy but it might be annoying in the long run at work.

Plus, I'm not sure I would like to go to my buddies work party as I probably won't know anyone other than said buddy.

All in all, follow your heart , who cares with what pepe think. And if party sucks ditch it early and go grab a beer at a pub.

You'll find the women will make comments but the moment you show up with your mate they're all going to be checking him out and within seconds they'll have sized him up and by the time dinners done at least a couple will have made advances on him.

Take your friend. Doesn't matter what they think. Unless you are in a conservative country (Islamic) rumors around your sexuality most likely play in your favour. Women will just project and you will not be bothered by work thots. Lots of the posts here sound like they are not from people that work in that type of a "political" "team" culture. I work in an environment that is highly political and you learn how to play the game.

Take every opportunity to mingle and build relationships in order to grow your career. You will look like a team player and part of the "corporate culture". Don't ignore feel good freebies like team events to enhance your image. I attend a lot of stupid shit I despise but I do it because it makes me more employable. I am a career focused person, I want to get out but the only way to do it is to earn money and retire faster.

Do not to talk about religion/politics, carry your phone and if you find your self cornered pretend to take a call. It also doubles as a recorder in case you find your self in a bad situation. If people pry into your personal life with question answer with a question of your own. Control the narrative of the conversation, and change the subject by pivoting. If they insist answer with an ambiguous answers that are broad, this will answer the question but prevent further information digging.

Taking a bro out for drinks is always good, only one thing to remember and that would apply to either dude or girl: You are responsible for your +1, so if they start some shit it will be your ass on the line for that, so don't bring the party animal that will over drink and start a scene or worse, a fight, or harass your female coworkers and effectively put you on the spot afterwards
