Ghetto setup, love it.

You should have seen it a 2 years ago lol. All I had was a USB mic, audacity, and broken headphones. We used to record on the floor in the hallway of my dorm.

I believe the proper term is Ghetto Fabulous.

Good. You have to start somewhere.

Nice dude. Move that speaker by window it will cause reflections. Also not sure what the room dimensions are but put them along the longest wall if possible. Enjoy your journey man!
[–]ascended89[S] 13 points14 points15 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
The room dimensions are horrible my room is a square. I put it against that wall because its the only wall without a door or other obstruction. Sadly this is the best wall. I'm going to get a really thicccc curtain or something. I actually worked as an intern for an acoustic consulting firm so I know what I need to do to get a good sound. Its just about making it happen lol.
[–]MesaBoogeyMan8 points9 points10 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Yeah I had my stuff in a 12x12 square just terrible had to put traps in corners and shit. A thick curtain will help! The fun and frustrations of home studio. Still nowhere as frustrating as a chic having a mood swing lol

FL Studio is great, but you should check out Renoise as well. It's a tracker and relatively cheap. You might find the work flow suits you better, but it's not for everyone. Mitch Murder uses it exclusively.

Thanks man I will.

Pro-Tools master race.
Most people hate is because they lack talent.
When you have the talent and the tools, the DAW to be nothing more than an empty canvas.

You’re on your way, my friend.
[–]2MetresAbove 6 points7 points8 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I like it. My dream has always been to play keyboard. Perhaps one day... In God's will.
[–]ascended89[S] 6 points7 points8 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
If you can afford a cheap keyboard and a intro piano book you can learn. Thats what I'm doing.
[–]KekOpera2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I learned to play piano from never touched a key to a solid 7/10 skillset in 18 months without a single lesson.
1 hour a day, everyday, for the first two months when you are learning fingering and scales and chords. After that 15 minutes a day everyday.
It can be done if you have the talent. Don't be scared.
[–]2MetresAbove 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Thank you for those encouraging words. When I deal with some burning problems that I have now, I will definitely give it a try.
[–]SecondProtectsFirst6 points7 points8 points 7 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
I used to love making music but the industry is way too oversaturated and rigged against you. Don’t get your expectations too high. And don’t spend a whole shit ton of money on it like I have over the years. If you can do it just for yourself and not give a damn when nobody listens to your stuff, you’re in a good place.
[–]ascended89[S] 3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Yah I'm prepared for nobody to listen. Back when I first started and used sound cloud, the only song that broke 3k was absolutely risuculous. It was supposed to be a joke. Nobody gives a damn about the work I really tried on. That aside you should send me some of your music. I would be happy to listen.

When Edvard Grieg was asked to set Ibsens "Peer Gynt" to music, he did as he was asked (and payed) for, but he actually despised the play and wanted to write music for it that he thought was dripping with irony. According to Grieg himself it sounded like "cowpat, norway-ism and complacency".
And yet, his "Hall of the Mountain King" became one of the best known and most iconic pieces of music in history. Funny how things sometimes work out.
[–]nomorekush0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Amen do it because you LOVE it. That's the only reason
[–]KekOpera0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I hear you on the money..
I just bought a used Komplete Audio interface...a fucking month later the preamps fry and now sound like garbage.
Theres 170$ down the drain and I need to dish out 300 to buy a new one.
Seriously got fucked in that deal...
[–]CiceroVoltaire4 points5 points6 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Reminds me of when I started the home studio thing. My ex, whole lived with me, told me that I'm good and music but that I spend too much time working on it. The thing is, I spent most of my time with her, and almost always brought her with me when I was hanging out with friends. The first time I didn't bring her, she called me up and said she was going to flush all my weed down the toilet. She didn't even have the fucking weed. She cheated, I kicked her out, and my life turned into music music music, the best times of my life.

A journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step, and you took it. Keep on, bro, life from now on is on the upswing, albeit slow.

When you become skilled and successful, you will treasure this picture as a trophy. It would be a testament to your dedication. Push on.
Armin van Buuren in his commercial for his MasterClass (or some tutorial) said when he started DJing, he was doing sets in a bar where he would bartend and DJ at the same time. It doesn't start off pretty. Pretty start ups are for the Paris Hiltons who go nowhere.

I love seeing these posts. Whether you do this as a hobby, or as a career, or whatever, this is how legends were made - From meager beginnings. Although, I'm assuming those equipment ain't cheap.

FLStudio :)
If you want to try out a different DAW, SONAR was bough by Bandlab from Gibson and they're giving it for free as Cakewalk by Bandlab.
It's SONAR Platinum without some of the licensed plugins (Bandlab hasn't secured those yet).
[–]ascended89[S] 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Yo it looks really nice. Thanks for the recommendation.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Hope it helps.
It still has a pretty big community and it's still a decent DAW.
FLStudios's still great in its own right. A lot of high profile artists use it. But it's not really the best mastering tool.
You could use different DAWs based on their strengths in the end.
[–]ascended89[S] 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Ok thanks for the advice man. I downloaded it now. Also what makes fl not tye best for mastering? I hear this a lot but honestly I know little about the little nuiances of eavh DAW.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link
FLStudio started out as a tracker. And while it's changed a lot, that's what it still is at heart.
While you can master well enough in FLStudio, its workflow is just not built for that.
A lot of people will render out their individual RAW stems and import them into other software that have a workflow more similar to "classic" mixing & mastering HW (skeumorphically speaking).
On the plugin quality side, there's always various great collections of VSTs that run anywhere (Slate, Waves, Applied Acoustics Izotope) so it's generally down to workflow. But some DAWs come with great built-in plugins that have less overhead than VSTs.
I'm not a sound engineer (just a programmer with a fancy for making music) by any stretch so this is half true, half pulled out my ass, so take t with a grain of salt I guess ?
But guys who are sound engineers and do this for a living say that, right now Studio One is the best mastering software (they ALSO have a free edition, but without VST support).
Still SONAR was seen as a very good option in 2017 for mastering, as seen in this article: https://www.soundonsound.com/techniques/mastering-in-sonar

Fl studio, my favorite daw. What genre are you producing?
[–]ascended89[S] 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Well I don't really produce anymore. At first I produced a bit of hip-hop since I was a music novice and hip-hop is intuitive and invited by music novices. However I ways hated what I produced but I always liked mixing. These days I mostly record anyone who wants to record anything and I mix it with an instrumental of their choice.
[–]TB4091 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
i ways hated what i produced
Dont we all Lol
[–]Herpnderp145 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
What's your favorite genre? Trance, House, etc.
[–]h00dies-and-g00dies1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Awesome. Any specific genres you produce? (Idk much, just know from a producer friend)
[–]KingOfYaks0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
The world would have fallen into chaos, war and death if it werent for Bill and Ted's excellent 80s music. Go and do like the Stallions! We may still have a chance....

Hey OP, is my first song any good?

And how are my Piano skills?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=borNgH2SIwU
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hyh0vuX6bjM
I'm still waiting for my first house soooooon to resume making more.
Your piano skills are nice man! That song is nice for your first song as well. You just got to work on your mix. I would take the piano a bit and give the vocal more presence! If you have the song stems you could send them to me and I can do a mix and send it back.
[–]bhavv1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I'll want to redo it with a better microphone first anyway, and I had zero vocal practice prior to recording that due to no privacy, just loads of retakes while my parents were off on holiday.
I just need my first house for privacy.
Lol I'm in the same boat bro. Having to record quietly is a struggle.
[–]LimousineLibtard0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yes sir

[–]CrackingYs 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
That brings back memories of my first stereo I had in high school, a cheap Technics receiver and Cerwin Vega speakers. Today I have a much nicer ($$$) high-end 7.1 surround setup, but honestly I don't think I love it as much.

[–]CopeAfterCope0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
What gerne are you making?
I produced hip hop at first but now I mostly record and mix. I have made many dream of making a trash mix tape come true for many lol. I hope to be grade A at mixing and mastering one day.
[–]CopeAfterCope0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I am working on a tape at the moment and I'm in a yt battle could you like to try and mix some of my stuff? My mic is pretty bad but I manage to get it to sound pretty good. Maybe you can do it even better because I'm specialised on electronic music and not really proficient at mastering/mixing
Sure man I can give it a shot! However at the moment my main computer broke and I can't get my plugin licenses off it. If I mixed for you I would have to use the good old stock plugins. I'm trying to get good at that to so I would love to give it a go still.
