Learning programming as a tool imo is/can be important. How do you learn programming? Look for annoying recurring on-screen tasks you're getting tired of doing and make a tool that takes you out of the equation as much as possible until shtf. When the s h t f it goes (usually) either it's you, the problem, because you failed (they just fingered the DB a little, no big deal, those relational tables didn't look nice) OR it's your tools that fail, and you go and learn what up with that, now, too. Ah, a new version, ok, let's see...

It IS a great tool to have, HOWEVER! Do.Not.Let.Anybody.Know: 1. you know programming 2. you know how to fix the office printer

Regarding 1: Because once they find out that you can do it, it'll be 'You do this, you know how to, you can do it!' For free, of course. You see, with 20+ years invested into learning not only your tools (programming languages) but also how to actually get things done (usually some silly reports or db queries/inserts that don't even get looked at), it comes naturally to most people you deal with that you should do it, THEY don't have time for this nonsense, they just need freewarez results, how else are they going to be able to waste their time on their own things and ideas? They have LIKE buttons to click, magazines to read etc. It takes a lot, BUT it IS an unimaginably enabling tool to have between your ears.

Having been a programmer for 20+ years (started with turbo pascal) I've learned that being a programmer requires you to have a Dr.Dr.Dr. title in psychology, communication, business, time management, fixing cars, professional shopping for others, problem solving, drama listening-to etc. Even men seem to try to go full retard vaginator on you. Seriously. You learn to say 'No.' so many times and in a manner that 'Normal people' think they already died, twice, because you 'offended' them by refusing to waste your life on them. They do still come 1 week later with 'I just got this new Fakebook idea, while I was taking a dump. It smells, now wipe my ass. Here's the plan, here's how you'll do it. We will need a logup (no typo, they just don't know what they're talking about) web site. We'll go on from there. Is it done yet, I heard you're, like, a genius, you can add numbers, man. Once that is done, we'll connect the web site to a factory that makes millions and since the 'system' will be doing practically everything, even the physical-world-stuff like stacking shelves, it'll run on itself. No electricity required. Once it's done and step 2 (the ????? step) goes through, I'll split profit 100/0 with you (them/you). If it's a success then I'll be rich and you'll have a great job! Think about it man. It's only going to be a few days, weeks, months or even years of your life, big deal. You know how to programmings, remember?'. I'll be your man-ager.

The usual hiccup happens when I tell them that 100EUR/h * 160h * 1month is more than they can afford. And so, they get slightly uneasy, because, you know, how could I?!?!? It's just 15minutes of movie-grade real-time hack prevention on 2 keyboards and 1 screen, in Wordstar2000 - for a 'real man' at least. =] Lolz. Never mind those puny 20 years I invested into my toolbox, that's MY problem. And so I, once again, explain that yes, it IS my problem. The one I am currently working on. Not theirs. That's why I have so much time, and they don't.

Regarding 2: I'm a programmer, I don't know how to put paper in the printer! What do you think I am, a biochemist?!!?!?

I'm actually doing similar, but learning C++. I want to program games (text based to start) and found it to be helpful so far. I've heard great things about Python as a language. I mostly chose C++ for its similarity to java.

My childhood was not a very happy one (parents were addicts and violent). At one point my dad bought a computer. It was not long before I started programming on it. I must have been about 7-8 years old. I have never stopped programming. It got me interested in getting a degree in science and engineering. After getting my degree I have been working as a scientist and project manager, often programming simulations in various languages. I think without programming, my life would have turned out very different. I think it is fair to say programming, being the kid I was under those circumstances, saved my life.

In my life I have programmed in BASIC, Pascal, C, C++, C#, PHP, Perl, Python, JAVA. I have made applications ranging from the very basic "convert all files from format X to format Y" to complex optics simulations on GPUs.

I would not recommend starting in Python as Python is not a language that teaches you data types in a strict manner. I recommend starting with C# or Java.

Also, programming for a company is probably not a lot of fun. If at all possible I would try to get a degree in engineering so you can actually write simulations or write plug-ins for commonly used programs in the industry. Imagine having to write a program like Microsoft Word. It is not very interesting, the pay is bad and the pressure is high.

seeing people using applications i designed, coded and debugged gives me a great sense of accomplishment. coding will change the way you look at the world though. it forces you to actually using your brain and logic, both things that a lot of people never bother using in their lives. dilbert is spot on on this

I did it for many years, and don't have the same passion for it as you anymore. But it's certainly interesting how programming is an excellent example of female behaviour.

They all use smartphones and their social media. Their lives is centered around them. Yet, they have no love at all for the computer guys who creates them. These guys are like totally invisible for them and it's like they don't exist. A perfect example of how women take something that men has built, incorporates it into their lives, takes it for granted.

Computer advances are from the ground up driven by men. No single big computer invention was created by a women, with the sole exception of some network routing algorithm, and even that's dubious. Yet, computer science was from the start a field of study that emerged when women had full legal and academic rights.

There's some doom and gloom here. Bad idea to program for a corp. bad idea to work for a corp. Basically they bend you over and fuck you and it makes many bitter programmers.

With that outta the way programming opens many doors. I program for my own business so it is essential to me. My recommendation if you go into business is to use C# with the free VS community. I use visual assist to help with intellisense.

If you want into the indie game scene then go with UE4. You can visual script until you learn c++.

I also recommend learning how to use a database if you want to apply this to business. SQL or MYSQL would be great options.

For music I listen to brainwave entrainment, JaBig, or whatever is groovy. Energy Club Files for the win if you like more of a beat.

long-time MGTOW + IT guy + coder (20+ years) here. ask me anything ;)

coding can be exhausting but it's awesome to see when people actually use your stuff. I created a reddit-like stuff 10+ years ago, still works with a happy user base. never monetized it.

sometimes I think with 40+ one can't be a good IT professional (I say IT professional because I don't just code, I do devops too), but I guess it's about having a generic interest in technical stuff which I do. moreover, quality IT guys are rare to find, and it's only going to get worse I think, I don't see too many quality youngsters, sadly. it is sometimes toiling hard, but this is the juice which sometimes worth the squeeze :)

it definitely can take a toll on your health, but as an introvert I always took it easily. however, I'm on the verge of checking out from society and going off-the-grid van-dwelling for the rest of my life if everything works out well. when that happens, I can retire early and do my other hobbies too (coding is just one of them). it will definitely stay amongst my interests, but there's a difference in doing it for a company (the money aspect), and doing it for yourself. I worked for a huge company for about 10 years, which paid me well but also was a blessing to leave behind.

if there is one advice I would give, there is no such thing as "the next big thing". learn the stuff which resonates with you, and stick with it, develop yourself to be professional at it. that's what made me the IT guy I am today. of course, always seek for new stuff, but always take it with a grain of salt, don't fall for the hype.

python, django, html, css, linux will stay the same like they are the same for 10+ years. sure they evolved, but the basics are still the same. follow the changes, and you can be well off.

Ruby on Rails
Python
C++

Remember, THERE IS ALWAYS A LEARNING CURVE TO EVERY PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE! It's like blowing up a balloon. First it requires a lot of effort, but after a bit, you can blow up that balloon within a few breaths!

Web Design is a good place to start, though. HTML, CSS, JS, jQuery, etc, all piece together and are extremely easy. Codecademy is a GREAT website to learn web design!
