In Australia we have $1 and $2 coins.

I do this with them but in a large tin type money box.

Have pulled over $1500 out of it twice in the past 3 years . I am currently filling it again for my next holiday . looking at Vietnam .

Saw an article for an app that does this. It monitors your spending habits and then siphons off money into a savings account when it thinks it can. The amounts are different and sometimes minimal. Next thing you know, you have cash for a trip, or a new toy!

Currently sitting on $1500 cash by doing a similar thing. I'd just stuff money in a box until it got full, swap it for bigger bills, stash those in a lockbox, repeat. Randomly dump 5s or 20s in too.

I only wanted enough to cover a months emergency expenses, basically got two months in full.

I first heard of the Dollar Bill Savings Plan from Neil Boortz years ago. Basically, I allow myself to spend any $5s, $10, $20s, or pocket change I want, on whatever I want, but I am not to spend any $1s; those I have to set aside. If I want to buy something that's a dollar and five cents, I better find the pocket change, or add a package of chewing gum or something to pad the purchase to get closer to $5, or take the hit and stow away all of the $1s I get back in change for my $1.05 purchase. At the end of the month, I can usually bundle up about $100, which is nothing to sneeze at since I'm not feeling deprived. And if, for some reason, I HAVE to spend some ones, then I have to make good by replacing the ones spent with a five, or a ten, or whatever. I CANNOT replace the ones I spent with other ones, because those ones are supposed to be saved up already anyway.

Always good to have cash on hand, but invest it once you've stashed away enough.

It's not doing you any good to keep stashing money away and not earning interest on it.

Even an IRA or Whole Life policy will get you back 5-6% interest
