This is my experience. Ex left, I wanted my boys cause she just wanted to take one, and I refused to left them be separated.
It's now 9 years later, she owes 18k in back support, and the Judge got it at the last hearing when he wouldn't issue an arrest warrant. "I'm sorry, Sir, this is all we can do". He was speechless when I asked what would happen if roles were reversed.

My next door neighbor won primary custody and she has to pay child support to him. He played his cards right. He was laid off two years ago and purposely didnt get a job until he won custody.
Apparently he avoided 15 years of child support. He won custody bc he had tons of proof where the mother was careless with the baby’s safety.

In the UK it’s normally the unemployed parent who gets the child, probably with the thinking being they have more time to devote to it.
It’s ridiculous as it a. Rewards bad behaviour
b. Encourages [typically women who are judged less on their ability to provide] to not get a job and be a drain on the welfare state and
c. It’s typically the person who can hold a job down who is demonstrably the more stable person and therefore likely more capable a parent
Though this arrangement probably suits many women just fine who can then use it to have their lives funded by others by choosing not to work.

You mean why don’t both parents quit working prior to any discussions regarding custody?
It’s typically a lot easier for a woman to take this route as they’re not judged by society as much as men by their ability to provide plus all other things being equal (ie if both parents were unemployed) then the courts will favour the mother and award the child to here.
So in OP’s case, I presume the father could only take this route because the mother was working.
