I've been involved in these discussions since the heyday of Atkins.
What you mean: "Sugar in the form of natural fruits is good."
What the average person hears: "Sugar is great? Awesome! Bring on the Twinkies and pies!"
[–]HookahArtillery2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Exactly. I actually need more carbs to function but it has to be the right kind or I feel like shit. Never been much of a meat eater but love dairy and mushrooms/starchy vegetables. My health stats are amazingly good because I just eat clean it's not really about cutting all duh carbs.
And honestly even that isn't a high carb American diet it's just normal by world standards. Maybe 150g a day.
But a lot of people figure if you're not going to cut carbs may as well eat cake. No faggot...lol all the same a lot of these fad dieters who try ketogenic don't eat propery macro ratios and just sort of pile on any meat product they can get ahold of and wonder why they feel terrible and can't get the keto to trigger.

I disagree. Try fueling yourself with fat for a few months and see how you feel. By the logic of 'the body uses glucose first' we could just easily surmise that alcohol is the preferred fuel, because that burns before glucose. When consumed with fiber, which is preferred, it slows the insulin response. This is a useful adaption as it allows us to store fat for periods when food is more scarce. We can control that though diet, and carbs are the key.
I like sweet stuff, I always have. It is a tough habit to break. At the end if the day that is all it is, a habit. The cognitive dissonance only adds to that difficulty, but it can be over come through research, experimentation and persistance. I have been experimenting for 6 to 8 months now, and only recently did my beliefs grow stronger than the habitual urges for sugar.
My desire for optimal long-term health now outweighs my desire for brief short-term pleasure. It is a feel-good world we live in where the focus is in pleasure and gratification in the moment, always chasing that next feel good feeling. Well, it feels good to beat the bullshit. The longer I stay on the wagon the better it feels and the better I feel both physically and mentally. Frankly, sugar should be treated more like alcohol and tobacco. When one is off of it for a while, one comes to feel the affects it really has and understand the semi-dependency they had on it, as with many other toxins.
I agree that it is okay in moderation, but that moderation is a much smaller amount than someone with a carb heavy diet would think. However, once they begin to take in the proper amount of protein and top off with fat they will find they no longer need to munch, less sugar tastes sweeter and smaller amounts are far more satisfying. I call that in between time a period of calibration. We do need maintenance and calibration, both mentally, spiritiually and physically. We are biological machines after all.

Sugar affects brain chemistry and behavior. Cut it out, then bring it back and you will understand that reality first hand. Making food, especially sugary food, a reward is exactly the line of bullshit the propaganda feeds us. It is a terrible reward, more of a punishment in reality.
Runners handle carbs better, especially if they consume them at the right time. For the inactive, sugar is poison. For pirates and seamen, rum was life because it made the water drinkable.
Potatoes are a good choice for active people. The fiber content mitigates the insulin response to the carbohydrate.
Going low carb is necessary to calibrate your body so you can understand what carbs do for you, in real terms. You will come to understand the right amount with time. You become more sensitive to what its effects. If you have not done it for at least six months and went back and forth to become intimately familiar with the effects, you really do not know what you are talking about.
Do not appeal to science as an authority. We have our own brains. Science can be bought, and it has been for years.

But it is poison in high quanitities, and those products are very common. particularly the inactive. I agree that low to moderate carbs are ideal, assuming moderate activity level to match. It's all about those insulin spikes. Your last two closing sentences are pure gold.
[–]Terribledragon4Hire2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
You should really understand the difference between natural sugar and refined sugar.
[–]Folwart4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
There is a difference, but not as large as one would think. Take for example fruit juice. Even if it is all natural, without the fiber from the fruit to mitigate the insulin response it is a bad choice. That's what people really need to come to terms with.
[–]nigelh2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Chemically there is none unless you count the stuff left in that refining didn't take out but that wasn't sugar anyway. The problem with sugar isn't what it is but how much you ingest.
[–]manthrowingmyownway4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
Sugar is bad. Complex carbohydrates, not so much.
However, keeping carbohydrates on a low will lower your overall area under the curve (AUC) of 24H insulin, and as a result of that lower AUC of bioavailable IGF-1.
IGF-1 (and insulin) stimulates cellular proliferation -> higher risk of cancer and faster aging.
In other words, reducing sugar intake can reduce your cancer risk and slow down aging.
Get your sugar from veggies, and fruit, which will lower the insulin peak because of fibers. Combine it with intermittent fasting and you might increase your high quality life by several years, while keeping neural degenerative diseases at bay.
[–]strudel- 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Correct! Furthermore insoluble fiber and resistant starch is converted into short chain fatty acids like butyrate by gut bacteria. So you're actually getting some indirect fat from vegetables too. Although Gorillas are able to convert a lot more fiber than humans, which is how they can get away with eating more plants than humans.
Don't try explaining that to /u/fearless_ser - he's an uneducated moron spouting bullshit in a few threads.
[–]manthrowingmyownway1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
One of the sad things about not studying anymore is the lack of high level discussions within my field of interest.
We had hour-long debates about metabolism and the optimal diets for different case-studys. You don't get stuff like that in corporate pharma.

This is what happens when you're an uneducated idiot who doesn't know the difference between sugar and carbs, types of fiber (insoluble vs soluble), etc... Go to school /u/fearless_ser - you're embarrassing yourself.
[–]wiserTyou0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Fiber doesn't negate the effects of sugar.
[–]strudel- 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
It reduces the glycemic index of a food, and lowers insulin spikes by making the absorption slower. As does fat.
[–]manthrowingmyownway0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
Fearless_Ser. I apologize, that I wasn't clear with the crossover between sugar and carbohydrates that I tried to convey in my text above, I will try to be more clear:
Stay away from refined sugar.
If you must get something sweet, eat fruit.
Keep eating veggies, as the high fiber and complexity of the carbohydrates won't be unhealthy to you.
Clear enough?

Sugar is not necessarily the preferred fuel for cells. Ketones are another source and burn much cleaner. Sugar is also highly addictive and raises insulin levels leading to metabolic disorders. The human body does not require sugar to function. Ketones can provide most of the energy required to live and the liver may produce glucose in the absence of sugar through neoglucogenesis. Two slices of whole wheat bread are about the same as a Snickers.

Am experimenting now with the Keto diet. Have let myself go badly the last ten years and already in just under two weeks my clothes fit better and i feel lighter and more energetic.
The first week sucked as I felt weird and got headaches, sometimes the shakes. Now i feel better daily and realize how carbs are as addictive a drug as any.
[–]wiserTyou2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Keep up the electrolytes. The real benefits come once your fat adapted, which can take up to two months (6wks usually). I eat once a day on average and never get hungry or run out of energy.

One thing I've rarely seen in these discussions is the idea of cyclical behavior. We evolved to get most of our fruits/veggies carbs during spring and summer. So when one eats a high carb wheat filled diet every day, then stops eating crap and eats low carb, it works...for a while. Even Eskimos had starchy tubers and berries during spring and summer.
[–]wiserTyou0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I agree with the idea of cyclical behavior, but disagree on some details. We've only cultivated wheat for what 10k years? They likely didn't eat it anywhere near the quantity we do today. Also many types of fruit have been crossbred to have as much fructose as possible. Starchy tubers would have a negligible effect on a metabolism that has never seen HFCS. The added sugar probably helped to store fat for the winter time. It's interesting to think about, but science needs to catch up with unbiased studies.
[–]Eyes_Of_The_Dragon1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I agree, but also realize that wheat has changed. It's no longer the Biblical strains such as emmer, spelt, and einkorn. It's the modern semi-dwarf variety that has had nasty things done to it.

Google nutritional ketosis. What that article represents is ketoacidosis, which only happens with diabetics.

I'm not there yet, but intermittent fasting has helped me get rid of cravings, which has helped with reducing the carb-craze.
Rye bread taste like cake now.
Fruit is a crazy taste explosion.
Artificial sweeteners almost burns my tongue.
Heck, even carrots are sweet.
[–]justareflektorr1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
agreed, yet there is a sideffect of sugar as in western diabetes epidemic.

what my rules regarding sugar are:
whole thing looks like this
High sugar days: 60% carbs/sugar 30% fat 10% protein High fat days: 60-70% fat 10% sugar 20-30% protein
Also from personal experiments I found that meal cycling works better if you don't mix macronutrients together. Example: meal 1 and meal 2 pure protein meal 3 and meal 4 mostly healthy fat .
Hope this helps
[–]enlightenedmgtow 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Fructose, okay in moderation.
Table sugar? Stay away like the plague.
At least with fruit you're getting some good micronutrients. But to each their own.

If anything, sugar fucks your teeth.
[–]Raiden6271 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Sugar does damage artery walls and makes us more tolerant to insulin which then requires more of it to be effective in blood sugar control. Avoiding sugar is important but our body is stupid and rewards us with dopamine when we eat it (it's an old survival mechanism, like eating fatty foods and sweet to stave us off from the days of starvation and tribal hunter and gatherers). Natural sugar from fruits can be had responsibly. I consume no more than 2 pieces of fruit a day (a pear and a banana, and avoid adding sugar to drinks).
[–]Raiden6270 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Exactly. Drinking soda is the worst thing in the world, they contain almost double the amount of sugar considered acceptable per day. I went to Starbucks the other day and decided to have their Green Tea Frappe because I had never tried it and should have known better and under nutrition info it has 78g of sugar!
[–]Raiden6271 point2 points3 points 9 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
Matcha Tea even has a better taste than regular old tea - that place doesn't sell coffee - it sells milk and sugar in a cup. You notice how quick your taste buds adapt when you try new food for a while? Once I stopped eating chips and had a Dorito I was like holy shit this is salty. I could literally feel it making my heart working harder. So many people grow immune to this type of stuff because it's all they've ever known.

This is the mgtow board not /r/ketogenic lol
I mean i know mgtow tends to advocate certain lifestyles to boost testosterone but honestly i don't think anyone cares if you consume carbs even too many refined ones

Sugar is poison so u get diabetes and pharmaceutical makes money. Eating fat doesn't mean u gonna get fat, fat is strength. Look at bread, it's light looks weak. Look at butter...

Beer has sugar I think, time to drink more beer.
Pft like I need an excuse to drink beer.
