I was helping out students figure out housing in the early 2000s. The dudes were fine in a 2x2 meter room with a window and hardly any space. The women needed duplex rooms with a "living area" and a "kitchen" and a "sleeping area".

Later on I saw pictures of one of the women's rooms. She had weird porcelain shit all over the place. I asked what is was for. "Design" But what is the purpose? "It's design" Do you put stuff in them? "No they don't open." So why do you have them? "It's design, geez, UGH."

A relative of mine is probably going to die in a couple years. I'll probably have to get rid of her "antiques" that she collected her entire life. Might be a grand total of 2000 bucks, maybe more... to have the garbage people take that shit out.

When I split up with a long-term ex a while back I sold or tossed out the stuff we had bought together (read: she picked it, I paid for it) for a nice clean start. My apartment looked exactly like this, minus the chair.

I got rid of a sectional couch and a "rustic" dining table from Macy's, the latter of which was probably used eight times in three years because it was 'too expensive to get dirty'. The bedroom set was a Japanese modern design Fujian bed, including matching dressers that held zero of my stuff. It looked like a cool porno bed but you'd bang your shins on the wooden platform all the time. Fuck that thing.

Persian-style rugs for the hardwood floors. Funky floor lamps from IKEA in every room, even though each one already had a light switch and overhead light. Useless "room accents" and knick-knacks from Sonoma Valley or Crate and Whatever the Fuck.

Mass produced paintings and prints. A giant fucking mirror with a lacquered wooden frame that was so heavy I had to hire a contractor to mount it. Nearly a dozen throw pillows. Matching curtains with fake rust-colored rods so they matched the exposed wood. All in all, maybe 10-15k+ worth of shit in a 2bed/2bath apartment.

My high school buddy was thinking of moving to my city for a new job but wanted to try it out first and asked if he could room with me. Dude's been single all his life but I warned him that the place was now spartan. He didn't care.

I moved my workstation and air mattress to one bedroom, and he bought a cot and tiny desk for his. We sat on the floor in the living room while watching TV or playing games. We ate our meals on a coffee table I made for a woodworking project. I set up my turntables in the back of the living room where the sectional couch used to be so we could spin records while smoking pot or enjoying a glass of Scotch. We turned the dining room nobody used into a gym with a weight bench, heavy bag, pull-up bar in the doorway, and boxing gloves.

The main dining room wall where that worthless mirror hung turned into the Adventure Zone where we mounted our rifles, shotguns, pistols, bows, fishing poles, and maps for the next hunting trips. No frills, no bullshit, and everything had a clear and practical use.

That shit was badass.

What's funny is that every chick we brought back from the bars thought we were crazy and had ideas on how to improve the place, along with a laundry list of things to buy and which stores to visit. As if we had any intention of having them back a second time, or their opinion on our living space even mattered. Our guy friends loved hanging out there, their girls hated it. Need a chair? Grab a plastic crate that used to hold my records, or a throw pillow that finally has a purpose.

Some context: my buddy and I were in our mid 30's at the time, well-established in our careers, and were both making great money. The place was perfect as it was and we could have easily bought all of that nonsense, but we didn't need it.

Then, after a year of awesome, we both fucked up got girlfriends...

I slept on the floor for a few weeks after my divorce left me without a bed. Slowly I bought pieces of furniture I liked and now am quite happy with what I have. Enough to feel full but not so much that it feels cluttered. Some need less and some need more but most men don’t buy things just because they’re “supposed to have them”. Go your own way, live how you want.

An older friend of mine years ago was dating and living with a woman his age. Both in their late 70s. They lived in her house together. Her husband died a few years earlier. She died of lung cancer. He was getting rid of her stuff and asked me to come over and see if there was anything I wanted. This woman had so much stuff that the house was crammed full. A lot of stuff she bought was still in the original package it came in never opened. Clothing she bought was hanging from the store hangers with price tags on them. They ended up donating a lot of it to charity and what was left was thrown away in a dumpster. A lot of the stuff thrown in the dumpster was still packaged in it’s store package and never used. Women are hoarders.

I was pretty minimalist. I spent many years travelling internationally (in my youth), owning only what I could carry in a backpack. I left a trunk with a friend in London where I unloaded all the ‘essential’ crap I couldn’t bear to be parted with when I was passing through. I looked in it the other day and it was full of tatty clothes with sentimental value and ‘cultish’ books (I remember Watership Down was one and Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance).

It is very cheap to travel if you have no debt or expensive habits. Even working a crap job will give you enough for a plane ticket and a bit of change within a couple of months. Think – no baggage (emotional or otherwise) and no debt. Twenty-four hours notice. This is not scrimping and living like a pauper either (neither is it living high, wide and handsome). It can be done if you’re not bogged-down in commitments and debt.
