Back when I played WoW, a girl tried to attention whore her way on a raid group we had. Whenever she would start trying to call attention to the fact that she was, in fact, a popular girl around her social circle, she would be told to shut up and concentrate. I'm Korean and I used to play competitive gaming. We Koreans take gaming very seriously and I never liked playing with a girl in the team. Whenever I learn that a player in our team or guild is a girl I quickly realize that that was why I always had to cover her ass cuz she would always fail in doing her job. It was a pain in the ass really. Playing against a girl was an easy free win tho. I've never seen a good female player in competitive gaming but I did see a ton with high ranks that didn't reflect their skill level. They literally getp carried their way there then think they got there because they were good. Pretty sickening really.

I remember, back when I was in my twenties, seeing guys talking to women, trying to get the woman to like them. From what I could tell, it usually didn't work unless the woman already liked the guy's appearance. However, I think sometimes they would enjoy the attention from the guy they would never date, while knowing that they would never date the guy.

I think regular ("the 80%") of guys are just figuring out that there's no point in giving attention anymore when the chances are so good that the woman is not interested. Similarly, I think more guys are figuring this out with online dating. It's just a waste of time for "the 80%," most likely. Why even bother writing a customized email, referring to direct sections of the woman's dating profile, with the email filled with original jokes and entertainment just for the woman, only to see that the email got "Unread - Deleted."
