I'd say that's very common for young single guys (especially in their 20's, and probably even early 30's); some of it may have to do with roommates, etc, but I think at the root its more that -- when you are in that age range, you're often very much "on the go" and so doing the kind of "stock the larder" much less plan some meal out of X elements, well it's just not high on the priority list.
Plus when you're young like that you generally not only renting -- but also "moving house" fairly frequently -- and that too doesn't exactly promote building up an array of cookware, or a larder of canned & dry goods.
Same thing often with other things -- like power tools, hand tools, and what I'll call "workshop machinery" -- most rental places don't have garages (and even if they do, they generally don't want tenants working on cars in them), and so don't have room for floor jacks, welders, table saws, etc.
And then of course even if you did have A rental place you could acquire and use all of that -- what happens the next time you move? Will the next rental unit be the same (unlikely), and would you really want to be shlepping ALL of that stuff from one place to another (and then another...rinse & repeat) every year or two (or even 3 or 4).
-- That's actually one of the big reasons IMO why eventually most people (including "MGTOW" bachelors) decide they want to own a house.
And once you do, well suddenly a lot of the things you may have been subconsciously/unconsciously "avoiding" -- like cooking, etc -- become a lot more practical.
Well, I'm planning on making BBQ pork ribs tonight, with baked po-ta-toes, and probably corn on the cob. This past Sunday I roasted a whole chicken, so yesterday & last night was basically finishing off the last of that (about half the chicken).
While I'll still do my fair share of quick-cook meals -- i.e. stir fry & other single pan things -- I'm finding that recently (for whatever reason) I'm back to doing bigger chunks of meat (hams, whole chickens, pork roasts, etc), either baking/roasting or broiling in the oven -- or tossing the whole thing (with veg, etc) into the slow cooker... and then freezing part of it and/or sticking the leftover into the fridge & eating off of it for a couple days. Both/all of those methods of prep are actually fairly fast (about the same time as a single-meal-prep), and -- especially with modern grocery or butcher bought meats and electric stoves/ovens -- the actual "cooking" take a lot LESS work than most men (esp old-school "married" guys) think it does... basically it's just occasionally "checking" the internal meat temp, etc.

I doesn't necessarily HAVE to be a place you "own" -- doesn't even necessarily have to be a stand-alone "house".
The key difference is whether there is an internal "attitude" change -- one that establishes some sense of permanence to the residency; or by contrast, to define it in the opposite fashion, where there ISN'T and ever-present idea that you're merely counting the months/weeks/days to the next move.

Well, while "WHAM. PANS." is definitely a succinct way of summing it up...
It's really more than that -- it's sort of the abstract sense or the sentiment & mental attitude change in that -- "Well, since I'm NOT going to have to pack everything up into boxes again in X months... maybe I could get a few more things? Gee... I could have cans of beans & tomatos and other stuff sitting on the shelf so they'd be there when I need them!"
Or even things like -- possibly having a FULL-SIZED refrigerator & freezer for the first time in your life -- and moreover having it ENTIRELY to yourself; i.e. not some dorm-fridge, nor one of those small "efficiency apartment fridges; and NOT a fridge that you need to "share" with 2+ other people (and where leftovers go to die, and any decent food you put into it... gets eaten by someone else).
The kick-off for a lot of guys is often something simple like the realization that: "Holy Shit! You mean I can have bacon anytime I want! All I need is a pan, and bacon in the fridge! (Or indeed, no pan -- just paper towels and a microwave -- plus the bacon of course.)
And if not that, then learning how to grill (or properly broil) a steak -- and having a BIG steak meal for basically $10 instead of $30 (or $50+) at some restaurant (and then getting a dubious quality meal as well).
Because the irony is that you really DON'T need a whole shitload of "cookware" (much less the ridiculous array of appliances) to engage in "cooking" -- a simple stovetop & oven (which virtually EVERYONE has, even in an apartment), along with a decent sized roasting pan, and maybe a sauce pan, frying pan, & 2 qt "pot" (grand total of probably $20 or less for a cheap/basic set at Walmart) are going to cover the lion's share of actual cooking needs/styles.
--
And for a lot of guys... well, even if they have had their "own place" -- it really DOES tend to be true that they DON'T "think" of it in terms of "domestic" stuff (like cooking) until/unless they have a "woman in the house."
Too many of them have been raised with a sort of "learned helplessness" when it comes to things in the kitchen.
For older generations (say back in the 1950's & even into the 1970's) that happened because "home economics" was always aimed at girls/women, and men were disparaged from learning.
Subsequently, even with all of the calls for "equality" and crap -- what has really happened is that BOTH boys & girls have been dissuaded from learning such things -- as if they were somehow "menial/demeaning" things that would be "below" them (especially with the emphasis on "everyone needs to go to college", etc -- apparently the mindset is a sort of "upper class elitism" that the only people who are supposed to learn how to cook are either immigrant-servants, or else 5-star restaurant "chefs de cuisine").
It's really a rather insanely STUPID mentality -- it's extremely DEBILITATING for the general public; it's akin to NOT teaching kids about other kinds of "basic life skills" like say "how to balance your checkbook" and instead trying to make "maths" into some mystical-ethereal-magical thing that is "for professionals only" -- absolutely ABSURD.
After all you're basically going to be living about 70 to 80 years, the last 50 to 60 as an adult without a "mommy" to cook for you... and you're probably going to need to EAT 2 to 3 meals a day, at least ONE of which will require some level of "cooking": which comes to a grand total of at least 18,000 meals (and probably more like 45,000 meals).
That to my mind seems like a subject & skill it would be WELL worth acquiring for yourself (even IF you expected to have a "partner" that would do most of it).
