I was arrested because a third party accused me of hitting my (then) girlfriend even though there was no evidence and she denied it.
Police just take the approach of "arrest everyone now, let the prosecutors and courts sort it out later". It's a consequence of society voting for politicians who repealed punishments against police for false arrests and such.

One of my ex's conspired to frame her friend's ex husband for abuse to get custody revoked from their kids. They hatched this whole scheme to frame him for hitting his ex and get him arrested. He knew his ex was crazy though, so he was very careful to hand off the kids in a public place and follow court orders to the letter.
Fortunately, they told a third friend, who was horrified and wanted nothing to do with it, she told her boyfriend who called the guy who was about to be framed. Cops were involved, but since no crime had actually been committed yet, everyone was told to knock it the hell off and don't do anything stupid.
Her ex maintained custody.
I heard all this from a mutual friend when I asked if she'd hung out with my ex lately and she said no, she doesn't want anything to do with her anymore.
So the bright side is at least two other women they told found their actions reprehensible.
