Everything here was supposed to disappear. Banned subreddits, deleted communities, cancelled blogs — much of what is archived here survives nowhere else.
It stays free — no paywall, no account — for the next man who comes looking, the way it was free for you.

As a (sometimes) marathon runner, an unfortunate side effect of serious long distance running is that your body type closer resembles that of a cancer patient than the current cultural ideal.
As seen here

Exactly, part of the reason that marathoners are so skinny is that carrying extra weight -fat or muscle- for 26 miles will significantly slow you down. Sprinters need explosive power and even some arm strength due to the inertial benefits of swinging arms.
But to an average Joe or Joelle, a sprinter looks far more fit than a marathoner.

That's the PRIMARY (or at least most obvious, external) purpose.
The SECONDARY (or co-equal) purpose is that the "bodybuilder physique" is just about the only "image/concept of masculinity" that most young men (I would say especially of the "Millennial" generation) are aware of, or indeed that is left to them as an option for expressing "masculinity" and "manhood" in our modern media-laden, media-image-driven society.
And moreover, it is an "image/concept" of masculinity that is incessantly indoctrinated into kids (and the most rudimentary/subconscious levels) these days from their earliest years -- seriously just look at this image as an example -- the two Star Wars toys on the left are the original late 1970's/early 1980's era Luke & Han, and are fairly accurate representations (at least in terms of body shape/musculature) of the characters as portrayed in the films; the two on the right are the late 1990's & current versions of the toys. (Here's an article on the subject -- and note that it is from a "bodybuilder" site.).
--
End result of all of that is that it is a sort of psychological "compensation". Boys and young men have become so effectively powerless, and indeed they are so bereft of any (what I would call) "healthy" image of masculinity, any "normal" adult males; much less any of what could be called "rites of passage"* -- that they seek out the only form of FEELING "powerful" that is left to them: the superficial appearance (a strutting display) of a "hyper-masculinity" that they have learned from media (and most especially from "superhero" comics, movies, etc).
So they're (arguably neurotically) obsessed with it (much as they are also obsessed with what is essentially a "notch count" in terms of sexual conquest) as a way to try to achieve a masculine "identity" to internally FEEL as if they are "men" -- and to gain some external "validation" (somehow, in some form, however superficial) that they have achieved "adult" status -- and yes, garnering attention from females (and/or other males) is part of that.
* This -- rites of passage into adulthood -- is another whole, and much deeper, broader subject.

I'm referring to the obsession with weight lifting, not fitness in general. Also, since when did the US become everyone's country?
