A bit of an anecdote. I've met plenty of men throughout my life that have had to pay child support, to include my family. However, there is this one fella who I used to work with and I'm still friends with. I've known him about 8 years and all that time he was always paying child support. Not to mention he was the one guy getting married. Not one, not twice, but 5 FUCKING TIMES! Once we compared checks. I was a laborer but I was still bringing in about $13 an hour. He was already a master carpenter so if I remember correctly he was making about $21 an hour. Yet he got so many deductions from child support that we ended up taking home the same amount of money.

I quit a couple of years ago and went into the oilfield where I was making double the money mostly on overtime until I got laid off this year. A month after that i ran into my friend at the grocery store. He told me that he was still employed but he had his hours cut drastically. The saddest part? He told me he had just finished paying off the last of his child support in December and he was stoked about it but COVID-19 screwed up his plans. And as bad as I might have it, at least I didn't spend years paying child support and not enjoying my money.

I dont know how US taxes work, but if you were to retrain to get a higher paying job, do actually afford living off of your paycheck ... would you still have to pay during that transition period? Or are you banned retraining?
