Any solo vacation I took sucked. So I stayed home once and played Kerbal Space Program for a week. Between stuffing my face, playing the game, and chainsmoking 3 packs a day it was awesome. Long term thise kinds of self destructive behaviors are not good of course.

It has become a routine for me to take a road trip every year now. Nothing better than the open roads. I've driven to every state beside Alaska and use Google Maps & https://www.roadsideamerica.com/location/ to plan for me trip. Just select the state that you are visiting and it will show you all the unique things to see and try in that state that are not really mainstream yet.

Where are you starting from and how much time do you have?

I had a great time on a very long weekend in the Outer Banks. That’s your beach with options for town and solitude, surf and bay.

Honestly though it sounds like youre already on the most important vacation of all.

I love traveling solo. The past couple of years I've travelled over to Asia to Seoul, Korea since I used to teach over there many years ago. Love it as a country and Seoul is an amazing city.

I like to go camping in the NC mountains, either car or backpacking. I will take my dog with me when I can, she is ok unless there is a thunderstorm then she sits in the tent or under the tarp and shakes. But solo camping anywhere can be very fun and relaxing.

My bucket list is pretty much a series of road trips meant to be taken solo. They cover most of the North American continent and I'm calling the whole thing "The Great American Grand Tour." I got the idea from my dad, who did took his 2001 Toyota Prius to all 50 US states and most Canadian provinces when he retired. I'm probably going to do it in a 2020 Mustang GT though.... 😁

There's nothing quite like hopping in a car meant for cruising with nothing but the clothes on your back and the money in your pocket and taking a couple weeks to tour the homeland one region at a time... Eating in cheap diners, never staying sleeping in the same bed twice, and seeing a new place every day. My current lineup is as follows:

Route 66 - winds from Chicago to LA. This trip tours a good chunk of the Midwest and most of the Southwest. Also the quintessential American road trip.
The Colonies - covers the New England region: everything on the East Coast between Washington DC and Maine.
Highway 1 - stretches the entire length of the American Pacific Coast, from San Diego to Seattle.
The Sun Belt - Starts on the Gulf Coast, rounds Florida, and covers anything on the East Coast south of DC. This trip shows you some of the best beaches in the US.
Texan Friendship - Yes, the state of Texas takes up a whole trip by itself. It's that fucking big.
The Great Lakes - a loop that touches every one of the Great Lakes at least once, and hits one of the few parts of Canada that's civilized and not endless farmland or uninhabited mountain wilderness.
Manifest Destiny - The American West. Starts in Colorado and hits Utah, Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho. Most highlights on this trip are national parks.
Arctic Expedition - a journey to Anchorage, Alaska and back. Also another good venture into interesting bits of Canada.

I like going to the badlands of South Dakota to hike, and then hiking up Harney peak. As I live in eastern South Dakota, I find the trip out there relaxing but not too long of a drive. For anyone who's never driven in the great plans, you can go for a long time and barely come across traffic. As you go from the eastern side of the state to the western you get the transition of terrain from flat glaciated land to unglaciated rolling hills.

I did this and applaud your decision to take a solo vacation. I went to the tropics. Bought a fistful of cigars and just enjoyed myself.

Something I didn't expect, though, shocked me. The number of times I heard women shrieking at their husbands or boyfriends. The heat. The food. His insensitivity. The prices. Something he should have know without her telling him. One woman opened her suitcase in the town and threw it, scattering her stuff. Then she demanded a divorce. Her wedding was two days prior.

I realized I never noticed this before because I was too busy keeping my wife from tearing my limbs off.

That solo vacation experience was the second best thing to happen to me. You already have experience with the first :-)

I backpacked all over England and wales for a month by way of bed and breakfast, almost exclusively in people's homes. great way to meet the people and also a great unofficial chamber of commerce to clue you into the best local stuff to see and do. when you walk into a pub, most people (outside of london) love to talk to an American and learn about the u.s. another plus is there's no language barrier, especially nice if it's your first time out of the country.

If I were you I'd go to NYC, I actually live here and I enjoy it tremendously; there's a lot to do for everyone and anyone, and you can do all the NYC attractions solo, and also experience NYC life.

The same can be said for any of the major cities in western Europe: London, Paris, Madrid, Barcellona, Berlin, Milan..
