I'm 50 and a life-long bachelor. The main insight is this: the longer I'm following this lifestyle, the more I'm praising my lucky star for having an independent mind and rejecting the incessant pressure from the society to conform. I'm emotionally stable, financially-independent, healthy, enjoying my hobbies and have a community to share my experiences with. So what else could I possibly need?

If nothing else maintain your health by eating well and exercise. Accumulate enough money to make sure you'll be able to pay for your needs as you grow old. I'm 70 and remain very healthy with no chronic health conditions and adequate wealth not to worry about the rest of my time. I see old people all the time who feel bad, take multiple prescriptions and worry about how to come up with their gas/electric/rent bills; and I see how they have little joy in their lives. And it's harder or often impossible to pursue interests and hobbies when you are sick and worried about being able to pay for basic needs.

Good advice from the other old coots on the forum. They've spoken some of my thoughts, so I won't repeat, but I'll add a little. For context: I'm 59, was married and divorced, haven't dated in 13 years, and retired a couple years ago. I'm happier and healthier than I have ever been.

One of the big advantages of getting older is that your hormones and sex drive diminish substantially. And at the same time, women in your "bracket," let's say (assuming you don't want to chase younger tail) are hitting the wall hard, going through menopause, and are losing all sex appeal.

That makes it easy to see how much our romanticized, puffed-up ideas of "love" are driven by hormones and neurochemistry -- which is, of course, designed to make us shack up, settle down, and raise a family for the next generation. Once you cross 50 or so, you're no longer a puppet of your genes.

I can't imagine becoming passionately in love with a woman, especially not one my age. The idea seems kind of ridiculous to me. I look back on the whole mating/dating/sex game as a phase in my life. It's a young man's game. I've been there, done that, got tired of it, and moved on. It's something for the young guys to play at, not me. I honestly have no motivation for it.

So as you get older, the decision to go your own way gets much easier.

You also tend to get more comfortable in your own skin as you get older. You become confident in your opinions and perspective. I'm not saying you're infallible or you stop learning, but you're not buffeted around so much by what the media or culture says, what peers think, etc. You are more internally grounded. You get more accustomed to going your own way, and it's not the struggle it was when you were younger.

And of course, you learn more as you go. That's one of the big advantages of going your own way -- you get to examine things from outside the system. It's very hard to reflect on these things accurately, if you're married and have kids. You can't really see it, if you're in the middle of it. You don't have the time and space to reflect, and it would be too threatening to your equilibrium, so you keep the blinders on and press ahead. But if you stand outside the sytem, it's easy (and kind of fun) to look at it skeptically and to see the flaws. That helps you to feel more confident in your path, over time.

Ok, I'm rattling on a little too long, so I'll stop. There are actually a lot of advantages to being older, as a MGTOW.

I'm also 50 and never married. I was engaged twice but never married. I was aware of the dangers of feminism since the 1970's when Gloria Steinem And Bella Abzug started their vitriolic bile against men. This awareness limits my eagerness to stay in a committed relationship. On top of that I am a felon and on 5 years supervision. I am in total apathy about having a decent relationship at this point. I call myself an Apex male- apathetic about sex. The flip side of the coin is that I have more time to learn new things and less stress from the derisive mind fucking and nullification tactics that most women employ.

I am 40, not that old really, and going my own way was the best decision I ever made.

The older you get, the more you will appreciate the fact that you didn’t have to go through all the crap.

Choose what makes you happy and live it.

If that is to be single and to prioritize yourself, then enjoy and live the hell out of it. Do what you want! Live life freely.

If that is to share a life with someone else whether you’re gay, straight, or bi then enjoy love for the moment because it doesn’t promise forever. Not everything worthwhile lasts.

What ever you choose to do with your life, live it genuinely and happily! Be free and independent if it warms your soul! Be YOU!

There’s plenty of old men and witchy women bitter about their marriages that failed and blaming the opposite for all of their problems. Many of my old bastards (my mates) died still bitching about their failed relationships and some wishing they were single. Some wished they had kids and found someone to spend life with. Some of my mates are happy. Some are sad and regretful. There’s no black and white here - Social expectations are up to YOU when you decide what you want out of life.

It’s really all up to you and what YOU want. Just don’t make choices you’ll regret or feel pressured to do because of societal norms.

Most of the guy friends you make will be around until one of you passes on.

This planet is a man's play ground if he has discipline.

Think for yourself. Question the fuck out of everything.

Save every damn penny for the future.. my goodness I was lucky someone took notice of me and sat me down and taught me basic finances and how to plan for early retirement when I was in my 20's.

Financial Independence and Retire Early. ( /r /FIRE ) That's your primary goal. Everything else will line up under it very neatly.
