Dude, thats how many casualties the British had ON THE FIRST DAY of the battle of the Somme, July 1, 1916. There's a reason there was a "lost generation" in Europe.

In Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom, 98% of all fatalities were men, even though only 86% of military members were men.

This means that men, on average, were roughly EIGHT times more likely to die than women. (Calculation: Ratio of male chance of death to female chance of death = (98 / 86) / (2 / 14) = 8.)

And to think that about that number of men committed suicide in America in the last two years alone.

Every year the same number of men, ~28k, as the number of students at my public university kill themselves.

I really wonder what the effect is on the economy. I wish I still had the article but I saw one from japan where the government was freaking out due to their high suicide rate among men and how it was affecting their GDP. I don't remember the exact number but they claim it was either in the hundreds of millions or maybe billiions per year.

Think about the lost talent in America, or the tax revenue. 28k men every year. My university has 27k students in the graduate and undergrad programs combined. In the last decade that comes to 280k dead men. Even if they are all working blue collar jobs or making 25k a year, the taxes start to add up.

There is no way this isn't having a large effect on the economy or the taxbase.

I respect those brave women more than the men. The men were drafted, the women were volunteers who signed up to fight and die even though they didn't have to.

Women in the armed forces are true American heroines.
