Well, it's just another case of female privilege, which they refuse to acknowledge. For women, career is often nothing but another option for acquiring wealth and a good social standing, while men without a career are usually neither wealthy nor respected.

You know what the result of real privilege is?

Choice.

Women are privileged. Feminists work to provide as much choice as possible for women, do nothing at all for men (unless it also benefits women and just by chance also benefits men) then are surprised and offended when their "we work on men's issues too" rhetoric is called as the bullshit it really is. Shrug.

Well, that may line up with your anecdotal experience but that doesn't really line up with labor bureau statistics - which show a large proportion of women in full time work that requires degrees (if they're white or asian).

Your friend's attitude might irritate you, but it doesn't seem like she's representative of any great trend (women are 47% of the labor force - that 3% difference isn't very informative).

EDIT: anecdote of my own - a friend of mine went to med school, passed the boards, then decided he'd rather work for JP Morgan and makes a disgusting amount of cash living in NYC. Or the other friend who majored in ChemE and now works at Amazon doing some marketing or something.

You misspelled "people". A lot of people, of both genders, go to college without any plans for what to do with their degree. Pretty much because everyone else is going to college, so it's become "the thing to do".

Believe me, I don't understand the concept of manufacturing interest in a particular field by women simply because that field has fewer women (and big paychecks). But... Can you fault a woman for trying to "have it all"... Women are pressured to be all of it... Career women, mothers, etc.. As men, our "privilege" is greatly a myth, but when it comes to social perceptions and expectations, we largely have it easier... If a woman is able to attain a high end career in a STEM field, have a kid 5 years in, take several years off and start again at the bottom once the kids are in school full time... Well hell, she has just done some impressive stuff for her family. If my wife did that for us, and was able to give up work because I made enough for her to do that, I would love her being willing to do so... Giving up progress in a career field to raise kids so they can really know a childhood with their mom raising them... That's huge. On the flip side, I would gladly give up my career to raise kids and care for our home. Problem is, we couldn't afford that... Few can.

It might seem somehow unfair to you, but that is just biology... If men could opt to handle pregnancy, you'd see a lot more issues solve themselves.

Just for the record my wife said the opposite, She did Maths & computing at Uni and became a systems architect. We married along came a kid and she said no way was she going to look after it or even go part time. If you have a career in computing it is nigh on impossible to have an extended period off and go back in. You have to stay up to date.

I was a partner in firm so I looked after the kid and then kids and carried on working. My income and career did suffer, and relationship with fellow partners.You cannot insist either way, had I pushed it she would have left me with the kids and sodded off so I do not think all women at all want to jack there careers in.

I honestly think it is a mistake for either party to stay at home full time and look after the kids, it is not a full time job and it is only a small part of your life.
