Apparently, the comic book world has been successfully colonized by women, with 50% of fans at conventions now female. At least, this is what someone at the GaGa is claiming.

It's because liking 'geeky' stuff got easy. A lot of guys will like something in spite of social stigma, and for instance the whole computers/geek/comic/sci-fi/fantasy scene was an instant bully magnet for a lot of boys mainly. Women on the other hand seem far less likely to do something if it's 'hard'. That's why boys never needed encouragement, but girls need 'empowering'.

It's because liking 'geeky' stuff got easy.

Precisely.

I remember back when I was in high school, my nerdy buddy who was trying to show me his Magic Cards at lunch was derisively kicked by one of a group of relatively attractive "popular" girls for doing so, and then humiliated by them during our next period class that we shared.

Needless to say, on Facebook two of them openly now claim to love The Big Bang Theory because it reflected the trials they went through as "nerds" growing up. And they love Game Of Thrones cause fantasy now be cool to them too.

Never underestimate the ability of swaths of women to do an about face once something becomes mainstream. Especially if they can claim victim status while doing so.

My sister is this girl, unfortunately. She spent years trying to get me to throw away my comic book collection, and then the Marvel movies started coming out and now, she's a bigger Marvel Cinematic U fan than I am, and she keeps asking me to take her to the films because I'm the only person she knows who wants to see them all.

Irony alert: she spent years trying to get me to throw away my complete "Winter Soldier" story arc, until she saw Captain America: winter soldier. Now, she can't believe I have every single issue of that run. Women don't respect your hobbies, until your hobbies that you got picked on for years, become mainstream.

[–]ThePigmanAgain[S] 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

There's also the "cool" factor. As long as you don't take it too far and don't look like Gollum with glasses and a pocket protector it's almost cool to like these things now.

And let's not forget cultural influence -- when superheroes stayed in the relatively small market of comics, feminists didn't care if it was a mostly male thing. Now that they are all over the movie screens, it's a different matter. No point in colonizing a wasteland -- until someone finds out there's oil under it.

[–]questionnmark 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They realised the heroes that these people worshipped, these modern day 'gods', were all strong attractive men. The boys wanted to be like these guys, but the girls wanted to be with them as well. They talk about 'cultural appropriation' like it's a terrible crime, and they make an argument against it. However when it is against a nerdy sub culture then it's 'different' somehow. Had Thor been a native American god then they would be singing a completely different tune -- convenient huh?

[–]analt223 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Casual revoltion. I call it the casual revolution of 2007 because it seems so much of our society seems to have stayed stagnant from that year (exponential popularity growth in things like gaming and comics, first modern day smartphones, rise of facebook as more than just a college network site, youtubes exponential growth beginning, etc).

But the whole point is that geek culture is mainstream now. Thus, there is more money in it. And women flock to where money is.

[–]ThePigmanAgain[S] 9 points10 points11 points 11 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

Not surprisingly, when some guy claims the industry will be majority female within a decade, nobody objects to that particular gender disparity.

[–]reg8392748 10 points11 points12 points 11 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

I honestly think once the "hype" dies down many of the women will leave and once again it will be mostly men.

[–]firstpitchthrow 7 points8 points9 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

This is also classic "apex" fallacy. Comic-con is about a lot more that just comics these days, its sort of a pop-culture meeting ground. Its not surprising that it draws women. Its a "cool" show to go to. However, who are the day-to-day fans who go to the LCS each Wednesday and buy the new books? That's where the rubber meets the road.

Here's the test: walk about to every single female fan at comic-con and ask them the following question: what day of each week do new comic books come out? How many do you think will know the answer is "wednesday"? My sister is a marvel cinematic U fan, she loves the "Agent Carter" tv show. If I asked her what day of the week comics came out on, she would have no clue. Just because you go to comic-con doesn't mean you read comics.

[–]paladinguy 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

This is true. I live on SoCal, and comic-con is just an event down here that pretty much everyone I know goes to. None of us read comics. It's just a pop-culture thing now that celebrates movies, tv shows, video games, etc.

[–]ThePigmanAgain[S] 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yep, every time i go to my local at least 90% of the customers are male. In fact, there are times when there are more girls working behind the counter than buying books! It's just a hugely male market.

[–]ThePigmanAgain[S] 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I assume he means the majority of people working in the industry, in which case it probably won't happen at all as actually creating these things requires more hard work than whining on the internet and then turning up at a convention dressed like Feminist Thor!

[–]firstpitchthrow 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Funny story about that:

My Comic book store guy used to have a "women of the DC universe" poster in his store. It had several of the most prominent DCU women on it, dressed in evening wear (dresses, high heels, their hair done, etc.) and my comic book store guy used to say that every single person who walked into his store and asked for a job, he would take them to that poster, and he would ask them "how many of the characters on this poster can you name?" Anyone who couldn't name half couldn't work at the store, if you could name more than half, you passed the first test.

Working in the industry, whether it be retail, creative, editing, whatever, at all levels, requires product knowledge. You have to know what's inside the pages of a book. Even to work at a comic book store (imagine that).

[–]ThePigmanAgain[S] 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

requires product knowledge

Sure, otherwise how are you going to be able to answer questions like, "Do you have that thing, about that clown girl who used to fancy the Joker teaming up with like, er, that chick who's like Supergirl but with really big jugs?"

[–]firstpitchthrow 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

Here you go, kind sir. That thing you described is actually a thing:

https://multiversitystatic.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/2015/06/Harley-Quinn-Power-Girl-1-Variant.jpg

That's my product knowledge :) And yes, I buy it, and no, its not feminists (at all) and yes, it is every bit as hilarious as you think it is. That's the beauty of Harlequinn, in a nutshell, she teams up well with everyone. She's like the comic book version of prime Magic Johnson: she makes every single character in the book she's in better.

[–]ThePigmanAgain1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Well done. You, sir, are a true comic book nerd! As for the series, i find it okay but not as good as the Harley Quinn issue in which Harl and PG find themselves on an alien planet ruled by a giant pug and end up fighting a giant slice of pizza!

Oh, look, i just noticed the caption on the Mystique cosplayer...

"Heroism reclaimed from the boys … Dina M poses as Mystique..."

Should someone be writing a piece on comic books if they are so fucking ignorant about the medium that they think Mystique is a hero? Probably not.

[–]DavidByron2 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Mystique is a hero about as often as she is male I guess.

Technically couldn't you dress up anyhow you like and say you were Mystique?

[–]analt223 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Its also captions like that which piss men off. "Reclaimed from the boys"? 15 years ago all of those guys woulda loved to share their hobby with a girl, most women mocked guys like that. Now that its mainstream culture, theres more money in the industry, etc, its "reclaimed from the boys"?

[–]ThePigmanAgain[S] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Funny thing is, to reclaim means to take back what was once yours -- comics were never the property of girls, except maybe for the romance comics of the sixties.

[–]ugly_duck 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I mean she does flip flop in the comics and she's pretty much a protagonist in the X-Men film franchise.

[–]ThePigmanAgain[S] 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

She's mostly a villain, as i recall.

[–]ugly_duck 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I would say she's 1/3 hero, 1/3 villain, and 1/3 anti-hero.

[–]firstpitchthrow 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Personally, my theory is she's a skrull. I mean how could you really tell the difference?

[–]DavidByron2 12 points13 points14 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Is this 50% the way farmville means games are 50% women?

[–]Kiwianimeguy 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I wonder of the 50 women includes professional cosplays who arent always comic book fans

[–]Ted8367 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

we may not have sufficient data on how many nerds reside on subterranean floors at parental expense, but we do know this: as the geeks have inherited the Earth

Funny, that. Get used to it , Michael.

“Men and women exhibited interest in the same sorts of things, similar spending patterns and similar attendance levels.

Thank you. Fuck the Guardian.

Comic-Con is not really representative of the comic book industry. I mean it may be the influence, but most people go there to see actors and to cosplay (which like Halloween the ladies love). I mean really look at the highlights, Star Wars, Batman vs Superman, Jennifer Lawrence with Conan, Bill Murray, Marvel movies and TV shows, DC movies and TV shows, Joss Wedon, Dr. Who, Game of Thrones, Walking Dead, Quentin Tarantino.

I mean seriously Comic-Con is not representative of "nerd culture" it is nothing more than main stream pop culture with a focus on movies and TV.

Jesus talk about an editorialized title for a post.

[–]ThePigmanAgain[S] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

How is it editorialized? I point out that it is the opinion of someone at the GaGa, not that it is my opinion.
