In search of sexier scientists

In “Why Are There Still So Few Women in Science?,” Eileen Pollack, head of the creative writing MFA program at the U. of Michigan, devotes 8,000 words to the churning passions that accompanied her return to Yale, where she was a physics major in the mid-1970s before losing all interest in science and math. Why, she cries out, did society not persuade her to pursue “the prospects, prestige, intellectual stimulation and income” that come with attending grad school in astrophysics?

Why?

Contemporary feminism is quite simple:

  • If men are at fault for you not being able to do whatever it is you want to do, blame men.

  • But if women are at fault, blame society or American culture or the media or institutional sexism or whatever.

How many will dare call you on your verbal sleight of hand? Who will even notice? And after a while, you won’t notice it, either.

But when an MRA complains about society, he's a misogynist.

"surprisingly"

[–]TimeTravel101 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Washington Post was also "surprised" when the court showed a modicum of gender balance in the sexual assaults case.

Thats noone of your business

Because the grammatication is seskist patririachy!c And punctutification!

Seriously, these people choose not to study math, but they don't study English either?

And no, no sane feminist would study in a STEM field, because then she'd actually have to work once all men are disposed of.

Disagrees with their parasitic nature.

[–]oshmkufa2010 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Um, excuse you? They don't enter the STEM field because of misogynistic shitlords who wear t-shirts with women on them obviously.

[–]BDMR_lurker 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm confused.

Would STEM be more palatable if it was filled with shirtless misogynistic shitelords?

Although I do have women on me everytime I wear a shirt to work. Makes it fairly harder, I tell you.

sorry, is late

I'd agree. Look at the suffragettes, and what happened once they achieved their goals. The leadership immediately became irrelevant. The feminists learned from that and essentially complain without actually trying to achieve. Take the feminist utopian narrative. There are loads of books, papers, and screeds describing how to set up an idealistic feminist society. Look up the communes that have lasted any time, and they basically don't have that many members, and are subsistence level at best.

Here's a fascinating article about how many of the feminist collectivist attempts failed:

http://modernfarmer.com/2015/01/women-farming/

Basically they figured out farming is hard and massive amounts of racism and back biting made creating a stable and economically viable community nearly impossible.

It's fucking fake. Look at the avatar...

[–]oshmkufa2010 -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Oh c'mon, as if there was no feminist out there who used that stupid argument ever.

[–]stevenjo28 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So true- more women than men actively seek out degrees that show no promise of future financial stability.

[–]MRA-automatron-2kb 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

We can't expect little babies to know math and science but they are smart enough to earn a woman's studies degree. :-)

[–]locks_are_paranoid 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I took a STEM class over the summer, and most of the students were male. That class had no pre-requisites, and anyone in the college could take it, regardless of their major. Most women simply choose not to major in a STEM field, no matter how many incentives they have.

[–]geniice 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I took a STEM class over the summer

Is this how people talk now? You might take an IT or computing class. You might take an introduction to chemistry or biology class. Perhaps some kind of botany or geology class. Remedial maths even (real maths has pre-requisites). "A STEM class" is a phrase that shouldn't exist outside the marketing department and even then simply that its time to get a new marketing department.

I assumed that it was how reddit talked.

[–]McFeely_Smackup 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Feminists want more women in STEM. Not them, just other women...because fuck that STEM working hard shit.

[–]geniice 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The numbers taking gender studies are so low that even if we switched them all to "STEM" subjects tomorrow it wouldn't show up above the statistical background noise.

[–]CrookedComey2 points 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Yeah but they seem to be the ones making all the noise. Vocal minority and stuff

[+]MissPerfectStranger 9 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

I believe she was talking about the misogyny inside the STEM fields, like from male peers and TAs. If you're a feminine woman in STEM, you can be 100% sure someone would accuse you of using affirmative action, or at least treat you with that in mind.

Either way, what the fuck does this have to do with men's rights?

[–]bufedad 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If you're a feminine woman in STEM, you can be 100% sure someone would accuse you of using affirmative action

Actually, this is one very real problem with Affirmative Action, in my opinion.

Even if you achieve success on your own, no one will believe that, because your group doesn't have to work as hard to achieve success.

Affirmative action requires that you work doubly hard to prove yourself, or worse always puts you among more qualified people who begin to see your group as inherently inferior, because that's all they are exposed to.
