I have this problem at my charity shop. The mens section is tiny, virtually no donations and what comes in is so stained and frayed it can't be sold. I despair because i see guys disappointed by it but there's nothing i can do with the algorithm watching the module width compared to sales

Right?! I am trying to find my son some regular pants, his first pair as we start to potty train. He's small for his age and do you think I can find anything? No. My wife counted 3x the selection in the girls section. It's wild.

I teach about gender and often talk about gendered clothes. It's interesting how students don't think men or boys are sexualised. So I challenge that they are, but in a very different way. They have less expressive choice, more 'adult' optionsn- I.e shirts and jeans and slogans such as 'little man' - where as you won't find a girls outfit with the world woman. It's geared towards a boy being a man before their time and a woman perpetually remaining a girl. Each are objectified in their own ways, neither of which I agree with.

But here I am, trying to find my boy some pants (underwear), but if I had a girl she'd have an option of frilly numbers to chose from. Why a toddler needs frilly undies is beyond me.

Eh, it’ll get boys used to marriage where the wife gets two dressers and most of the closet space while the husband gets the little dresser but the wife keeps all her junk on top of it.

It's got to do with the trends of consumerism. Women, essentially, 'spend' more than men and therefore, it would make sense to cater to their tendency for hoarding. By offering women more choices, brands could ensure that the purchase of their product lines remains not only consistent but increases year on year.

I swear, when I got to H&M to browse for some clothes, the female section had the whole ground floor and half of the second floor dedicated to female clothing. And the male section was a small corner with plain t-shirts and jeans

Darn, I used to work in the clothing department at Walmart at night. The men's, boys, and male underwear section was the same size as women's clothing alone. The women's 'intimates' took the same space of the boys section (and had the fitting room situated between 'intimates and womens'. The girls' section was slightly bigger than boys and was placed next to the main aisle next to electronics, so it was easier to see

With all due respect I don't think this is explicitly a men's issue. Even with modern times ushering in more and more men who are interested in fashion beyond business casual, women still purchase nearly double the amount of clothes as men do. There are many reasons for it like that women's clothes are often less durable/made poorly so they need to be purchased more frequently (but are, on average, cheaper than their male counterparts..), women are more trend-oriented and therefore some may buy clothes that they soon lose interest in, etc. and I think those are all valid and interesting processes to examine from a men's issues point of view.

All of this is to say that it's not just the store owners going 'uhh fuck men or whatever' as much as it is a financial decision based on market trends. The reasons behind those trends are each their own mess to look into.

Materialism is always promoted more in girls than boys. Right from early age, evidentially. Companies know they can get more for their money by investing on clothing for girls & women. Really comes down to girls being more profitable for clothing retailers

Welcome to the future where we have a thing called the internet to buy clothes, more than you could ever imagine in your antiquated shops. And don’t try to give me any bs about trying on clothes in the shop; I was 19 or 20 before I ever did that. And do you know where I went … a mens shop, a place where they only sell mens and boys clothes. Amazing huh, you must have been walking past them your whole life without knowing.

Men/boys buy less clothes, women make up the larger percentage of retail purchases. Store volume reflects that. It's not oppression, just an outcome from active decision making of millions of men and boys not to prioritize clothing purchases. That's all.
