For the record, brogrammers are hired, they don't do the hiring.
This entire argument is ridiculous. Brogrammers exist, but have absolutely nothing to do with whether or not women are hired.
That said, I'm growing tired of equality consistently being interpreted to imply there must be as many women in your company or industry as there are men. It's so blatantly idiotic, and so easily exposed as such, that I'm surprised it's lasted as long as it has.

Your point about equality is absolutely correct. All the insistence on 50/50 in positions that don't have equal proportions of applicants creates unnecessary doubt about the suitability of candidates.

IF there were equal proportions of genders capable (in terms of education and work experience) of performing the jobs, THEN I would understand an average of equal proportions among MULTIPLE companies.
But to insist that any one company or organization should have equality for any given field is ridiculous, at best.

Programmer here:
Brogrammers are real, but they're the bottom of the barrel. They're the social media loving shitty web guys who think they're awesome because they know HTML and CSS. They're generally looked down on by "real" programmers. They're basically the male version of the social media divas.
They don't exist in the "real" development world where teamwork, planning, and code reviews are the order of the day because their egos get bruised too easily.

No such thing. I've worked in software for two decades. The only reason female programmers aren't hired is if they are completely incompetent. The industry is desperate for female programmers and sexism against women programmers isn't tolerated. Nerds don't like racism or sexism at work - for obvious reasons. Programming is one of the most pure meritocracies you'll find.
Programming isn't a clockpuncher job though, it's a lifestyle. The women I know who are lifestyle programmers are perfectly good programmers, every bit as good as the men. On occasion though we do see women (and men) who are totally out of their depth, thinking that a semester of Visual Basic has prepared them to deliver four 9's enterprise software.
"Brogrammers" is crap though. Programmers are nerds, not frat boys. The two don't really get along.

In the development world, it's painfully obvious if you're competent or not. So many other people help maintain and test the code that you write that things like race, sex, and body odor don't matter much as long as you're good because ultimately the quality of your code will make their life better/worse than any personality trait you could possess.

And in an industry where companies regularly post talent bounties for 2000 bucks a person, there's no incentive to ignore women programmers. I'm so sick of hearing about "brogrammers" because to me, the reason for the lack of female programmers is obvious: it has NOTHING to do with the programming industry and EVERYTHING to do with how we educate the next generation of kids. The reason there are few girls coders is that young girls assume that math and science is "boy's work." If you don't get a kid hooked on math and science by high school, that kid is never will. If you want female programmers, get girls interested in math and science early.

They very much do exist. Also, this is a very interesting perspective on the industry. Two decades? Are you sure? In what country?
I'm not trying to be an ass, really, but I can yank a brogrammer out of his brogramming chair right now. It's not some rampant epidemic, but base level programmers who pop their colors as a matter of fact do exist in this industry. Programming is a lifestyle, sure, but projects can be compartmentalized and the easy stuff can be handed to a gaggle of brogrammers so they can be programming rockstars with their HTML and JavaScript.
The industry isn't desperate for female programmers, the industry is desperate for great programmers. I agree programmers and brogrammers don't really get along, but to suggest they don't exist is a lie.

That article doesn't seem to be talking about programmers but rather the ancilary occupations arround programmers. Dell doesn't do much software, and the conference was a partner summit. As a programmer it feels more likely that the audience was full of MBAs and upper management types instead.
