Comic books. They don't seem as daunting with the pictures, and they are faster to finish which gives a sense of accomplishment.

My fifth grade boys really love the percy jackson books. The eragon series are fun and exciting as well. They're classified as YA girls like them as well so both groups could enjoy. Keep some non fiction on topics they enjoy. How things work, animals, weather, sports. Garth nix has some interesting books for that age group some with some with male some with female protagonists. Phillip pullmans golden compass series, I mean giant armored war fighting polar bears! The hatchet is a classic.

Comics and graphic novels are solid. There are plenty that are kid/school friendly. Also don't be afraid to talk to your schools librarian, ours helps me with stuff for our kids.

Missed the third grade reading level. The above might be challenging so better as group reads. Captain underpants got my brother reading, diary of a wimpy kid are simple fun books, limney snicket my son likes he's at that reading level.

I wish to second the Heinlein works. He wrote Sci-Fi for young boys in installments for Boys Life Magazine. The compilations in book form have great "stopping points" for reading in class or during "reading periods."

Well done on doing this. I have heard elementary school boys say "I don't want to read X, the girl always wins." There is a lot of material that "puts down" boys in subtle ways disguised as "typical boy behavior" or the like.

Part of the issue, with media specialist at our school is that they are practically clueless on modern fiction for boys, and seem to have little motivation to improve their knowledge.

Piers Anthony and Robert Lynn Asprin come to mind. Pretty easy to read fantasy fiction with decent themes and just enough mischief to make it fun.

My friend's son really liked the eragon books. He doesn't read much, but he was very excited to read each of those.

How about some classics, like Hans Christian Andersen's tales, Winnie the Pooh or Alice in Wonderland and Through the looking glass?
Another interesting book is Korczak's "King Matt the First". I really enjoyed Preußler's "Krabat". Further Erich Kästner's children's books are solid and interesting. For fun or to learn French I can recommen the "Le petit Nicolas" series.
For the rather older children (maybe 10+) I like Robert Louis Stevenson or Henryk Sienkiewicz ("Quo Vadis?" or even "With Fire and Sword", although the latter is a big book and portrays a bit of brutality and cruelty.)
