This is an old article, but I can't say I'm surprised. If people are hiring because of what they are (gender, race, religion, etc) instead of who they are (personality, skills) then that is anti-meritocratic, which means the company isn't hiring the best people suited for the job.

If a company isn't hiring based on merit then it's no wonder that company performance doesn't improve. This is why equality of outcome is far more dangerous than equality of opportunity.

It's from only 9 months ago. I don't think that's particularly old.

But, yes: I agree. As soon as you start hiring people for reasons other than merit, you have to expect mediocre results at best.

This whole diversity thing kinda boggles my mind. If diversity is to be believed then you would have to assume ALL women/minorities think alike otherwise it would be crap shoot if that new diversity hire is going to improve things. Yes I agree that a woman MIGHT have a different perspective than a man BUT then again she might not.

[–]chadwickofwv 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That also does not mean that her perspective is useful, valid, or sane.

[–]Xorism 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Diversity is good, if the person hired is the best qualified for the position otherwise you end up ruining your product/company (see google). I think the problem with diversity hiring is that your company is banking on the new diverse staff being as good or if not better than if they hired based on merit.

[–]Mode1961 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

For me, I am not certain diversity is in itself a good thing, I mean just because a qualified person meets a specific set of genital requirement does not mean they bring anything to the table that a person of the opposite genitals would bring.

[–]killcat 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm fine with diversity being a "tie breaker" but that's it.

[–]grasshopa 6 points7 points8 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

In general, I agree with you...but man, do you watch the hirings and firings of C level execs?

Talent and merit already have nothing to do with it. I'm not suggesting quotas are OK, and I fully recognize that C level postings are a world unto themselves, but ya; merit has nothing to do with employment or salary at the board level.

You are missing the argument. Its: "we need to diversity because that is what our client's want" not because "its more efficient."

Every investor knows this. They do their own research, if their was a link these share valuations would be way up. But they are not. GSK is a very interesting one to watch. In the past year a new female CEO has replaced nearly all the senior management with a 50% split of females. The share price is 20% lower than when she took over. I am not saying the two are linked at all. It is just one to watch at least one for me,since it has become very female orientated. (this has been an intentional policy). The share price needs to get above £15.50 for it to be in profit. If this share flies then their could be something in having a more even split but I am yet to be convinced it makes any difference either way.

This is a great comment and really informative. I think most MRAs would agree with me that I'm not at all against women on boards, it's just that to get to 'the top' you have to (or should) start at 'the bottom', and generally there are just fewer women there. I've worked with, and for, loads of great women (and some awful ones) but the best have always been there because they were good, nothing to do with their gender.

Exactly. If you are the best one to do the job, you'll get the job.

Most of these people are only interested in equality in the attractive and well paying jobs. They didn't care about equality in video games and comics until they realised how profitable they were. So they shoe horn in to an industry they don't even really care about (Anita Sarkessian is a prime example).

To this day I've never seen a female garbage disposal worker.

Remember when the (black, female) CEO of sams club refused to do business with a supplier because they were all men? Investors know, but they’d better toe the line, too.

[–]mikesteane 7 points8 points9 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Either way, there is no need for legislated quotas. If gender diversity improves company performance, then market forces will promote without need for legislation. If it does not, quotas will impede effectiveness and profitability thus reducing the tax that will be paid.

I think feminists figured out some time ago that the meritocracy of the free market does not favour them, and is why today so many feminists are socialists and communists.

Climbing the corporate ladder up being a CEO or board member is just too much hard work, so they'd rather see everyone else pulled down to their level.

[–]mikesteane 6 points7 points8 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It looks like Marxism has morphed into feminism, but I rather think it is more a case of both ideologies being driven by the same underlying mentality.

[–]Nafti45 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You know, I have an idea. We create a software almost like Skype but that disguises a person's voice and face. Then, business owners would not know anything about a person except their work. Everybody would work from home, and for interviews and meetings, the manager could use this software to talk to people without being descriminated at all for any reason.

[–]bastardstepchild 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So what you’re saying is that hiring the best qualified people regardless of fashionability is the key to success? Sadly, this will almost definitely be ignored by the people who ought to be paying attention.

[–]Hirudin 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

  • Everyone is the same.

  • Diversity is beneficial.

Pick one.

[–]minsheng 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The article suggests that there is weak connection between performance and diversity. However, since it is believed that females in executive teams are usually hired not on a merit basis, would that imply that with better women the performance could actually improve?
