First, the discrimination aspect of section one of the ERA is already incorporated into the 14th amendment.

Second, if I understand it correctly, the ERA means women get the draft and custody battles can't favor the mother, which is 100% in line with men's right philosophy.

Yes I would support the ERA I just worry about how it would be used. Most MRA's I feel would support the idea of the ERA as most (excluding the anti-women crowd / male version of femi-nazi's) are concerned with equality and would more appropriately be called Equalists but because there is no real group that represents that view, Men's Rights is the only way to have an open conversation for equal right's for everyone without limiting the right's of men.

Of course men should support the Equal Rights Amendment. It would theoretically put an end to women's privilege which is extensive.

The ERA would be a great idea though I think it wouldn't pass today. The last debate was men standing against the act but now that it could drastically help men I wouldn't be surprised to see feminists stand in opposition to it. Men's rights departments, female draft eligibility, rights to custody, and various other actions could make passing it disadvantageous to women.

Sounds perfect.

The problem: the application of this law is only to harm the current benefits reaped by women and minorities. So it can't pass. Feminism is mainstream, they couldn't allow it or the entire agenda of their movement would be over.

Neither should receive any favor simply based on their gender or skin color. Both should be treated as equals, especially under the law or when dealing with government contracts, tuition, publicly funded scholarships and any other government body. Preferably when dealing with any private institution as well, but then again, I'd prefer that private institutions (NAACP, Augusta National Golf Course) get to play by their own rules and generate their own funding.

No Amendment is that short, is it? I am Canadian, so I don't know. But it seems ridiculous to think that this little bit is the entirety of the amendment. It seems so out of context, and it needs to explain how it will be implemented.

There are lots of rules out there that require equality under the law, and then go to suggest that there needs to be provisions to ensure equality in practice (like gender quotas).

So - a better explanation is needed in order to assess whether I would support this, as an MRA.

(Oh, and I would not call this Men's Lib. We aren't liberating men.)

Harriet Harman is introducing something very similar here in the UK. Actually, it probably goes well beyond this.

Amongst other things, it will mean that gym instructers could face jail if they advise a 100lb pregnant woman not to lift the same weights as the steroid gorillas.

I have mixed feelings. Although I hate the idea of socialists trying to enforce equality by law, I think all men's rights activists should study every word contained in these bills - and use them whenever we can to stop instances of discrimination.
