Although I don't agree with using tax payer money to fund services that exclude the male homeless population, here is some context from their website.

So the government required these shelters under new policy to compete for funding. They give most of the money to the "big four" religious charities who are now the main non-government providers of homeless services. The table scraps are given to a couple dozen other "specialized" shelters to compete over which is no where near enough to maintain all of them.

They are trying to save their shelters from being shut down due to insufficient funding. I'm not sure what benefits are made by excluding men, and they don't really elaborate on the website other than marketing it as "specialized" care for women and children.

Probing deeper they seem to belong to what they term the "Women's Refuge Movement", being a collective of different refuges across the Sydney area that were more or less established around 40 years ago. They are women only, women-run, and they operate on feminist principles.

By focusing on homelessness – and ''families'' – we lose sight of women and the women-centred vaues [sic] that have informed the establishment and running of so many services. And the tender simply ignored them. As a result more than 60 such services statewide have lost their funding (a combined total of $5 million) and are set to close.

I'm confused, aren't women part of families? Women homeless aren't considered homeless? I guess this leaves us with more questions than answers.

My speculation based on my reading is that because the majority of women are homeless due to domestic violence, their intent is to seperate them from men and offer specific counseling to accelerate their recovery. So basically, it's specialized care for female homeless victims. I cannot say I agree with excluding tax dollars as long as there are still men sleeping on the street, and their justification would lie in trying to prove why women are a special case. Although, I maybe overlooking something.

Yeah, because if there's anything we need, it's even more women-only services. 90% of homeless are men, but let's pump all of our resources into helping that small fraction of women!

Boo fucking hoo. You want to know what "shelters run on feminist principles" means? It means a sign outside the shelter saying that no boys 13 years or older are allowed to stay with mom and the rest of the kids, that's what it means. Fucking worthless animals.
