So after all this bashing how sex (male/female) and gender (man/woman/xe/attackhelicopter/...) are totally different things, somehow female is a gender now. Wikimedia isn't much of a programming language. Calling this a "hackathon" is like calling a stroll through your back yard an excursion or a safari. Of course this is for women only, because male developers would be insulted by the very notion of a "wikimedia hackathon".

i've seen plenty of promo emails go out for female only hackathons. themed hackathons are already hard to host without some artificial restriction on attendees.

wanna know what happens? go look at a non-newbie dev meetup that's free to attend. it's always 99%+ male. there are very few women coders, and even fewer want to spend their free time writing code. a month before the event, they invariably open it up to "male technical assistance" to fill out the teams. if they don't, they usually cancel it day-of when no one shows up.

To be fair women are really underrepresented in IT. And working in that field I've witnessed a lot of toxicity towards them. It's not like that time I heard about a female only punk music festival, that was just dumb.
