I am a new hire at a college as a college admissions counselor. I am one of three male staff members, the other six are female. Being in higher education I find myself in many discussions with feminists of all sorts. That is not an issue in and of itself, I fully support individuals to pursue what ever beliefs they want.

The problem I am dealing with is the discussion of sexual assault, rape, sexism, etc. within the office. I understand that women are generally the victims of the above offences, and I truly feel sorry for those women. However, I am growing despondent over how casually I am lumped in with the perpetrators of those offences.

It makes me sad. I feel as though I am being pigeonholed simply because I have a penis. I constantly find myself on the defensive as I try to make the point that not ALL men are bad. It's just exhausting, and it's disheartening. I love my job -- honestly, but even now I find myself wondering how long I can remain in this field with the culture the way it is.

For those of you who work in higher education -- how do I handle this? How do you stay positive in your work environment? Is the only option to just shut up and keep my head down?

IMPORTANT NOTE: No one in the office has said/done anything that would require a report to HR, so I am not looking for suggestions along that route.
