The Law Commission began its review of hate crime following a campaign by the Labour MP Stella Creasy. She wanted misogyny to be recognised in the same way as racial or religious hatred because of the high levels of harassment that girls and women suffer.

Lol this lady tried to launch a campaign against men and the Commission turned around and decided men need protection from malicious women also

Let us hope she shot herself in the foot.

Or in the mouth.

I don't support "hate speech" laws. I think America has it right on this: free speech is far more important than political correctness.

There is a real danger of the slippery slope. Eg Right wingers/Jewish groups in Canada actually tried to ban criticism of Zionism on the grounds that it was "anti-Semitic." Thankfully they didn't succeed.

There are a lot of morons on the left who think these laws/polices will only be used against their political enemies, but that's not how things work in the real world. I also think the Alex Jones precedent was awful; the tech giants have way too much power. It's not just the government we have to worry about. Even in the US people routinely get fired from their jobs for making un-pc remarks on social media. This creates a chilling effect even if it is technically legal to be politically incorrect.

Noam Chomsky is an example of a principled leftist who supports free speech. He condemned the censoring of Alex Jones; he doesn't support "de-platforming" controversial speakers on campus; and he even defended the right of a holocaust revisionist to publish in France.

One of the best ways of putting an end to "hate speech" laws and the hyper-policing of language would be to start using them against feminists. They are by far the biggest bigots around, and constantly use hate speech against males. I support the NCFM's title IX charges against gender studies professors (two so far). Indeed, enterprising MRA's could literally shut down gender studies by taking a close look at what they are teaching; their entire philosophy is rooted in hatred. I'm actually surprised MRA's in the UK and other countries where hate speech is illegal haven't brought charges against any feminists. They routinely write absolutely vile material about men in major media publications. I understand that people want to take the high ground and not stoop to their level, but again, forcing feminists to abide by their own standards may be the best way of ending anti-free speech policies.

Being something of a feminist, I routinely criticise and / or report feminist hate speech on Facebook. They take it down though there is a lot of randomness in the decisions. They only have 7500 human mods so I'm sure they use AI a lot.

Feminism suffers badly from mixing supportiveness with ideology. The inevitable result is bigotry toward men flourishing because people don't want to call each other out.

When I do complain about e.g. body-shaming men by using penis size as a generic insult, they understand why it is wrong. I see women doing it too, just not enough.

Feminist subs on Reddit usually have ungendered rules against gendered slurs and maybe generalising gender, and will remove comments if you report them.

I personally believe "hate speech" or verbal abuse as long as it doesn't instill violence shouldn't be seen as a crime. Speech should be free even if it isn't nice.

[–]brand-new-bad-news 6 points7 points8 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

These aren't hate speech laws though, they are hate crime laws. A crime has to be committed then they determine if it's motivated by one of the protected characteristics. I personally think some types of verbal abuse should be against the law, otherwise someone could follow you down the street and shout in your face for as long as they wanted without fear of repercussions.

[–]symbioterabbit 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes but there are other laws being broken in that situation. Most places have laws against creating a public disturbance. Hate crime exists but you need to be committing a crime for it to qualify. I just wouldn't consider verbal abuse as a crime unless you are creating a public disturbance.

In the UK? Hah, they'll probably include an exception for white men in the law.

[–]Tikylme 5 points6 points7 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Hate crime is a completely bogus concept in the first place.

This is stupid. It's an attempt to illicit support from us men, so that when a woman feels like she's experienced hostility from men she can press charges. This is all thought crime, and speech policing. Stop supporting this bullshit, its only going to remove rights, not help men.

[–]ForAndAgainst2 points 7 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

What we really need is protection from are stupid government bureaucrats finding new reasons to lock people up for unproveable thought crimes.
