You've got to wonder just how far our justice system has "progressed" when a teenaged girl can make an accusation against a teenaged boy about a crime that supposedly happened years before and that's all that's needed to send him to prison for years .

Anybody else ever read The Crucible ? It just keeps coming back again , and again , and again , and again .

I think the post and most right-leaning publications in general are more sympathetic to men's rights. I don't consider myself conservative or liberal, just an observation.

You are right, though. This is a good article. They made sure to name her right off the bat. That's important. This statement right off the bat was excellent also: "Now that his lone accuser has admitted that she invented the charges against him, the state and the courts seem paralyzed, unable to quickly arrange for the release of the wrongfully imprisoned man. This is a travesty."

It's also good that the writer mentioned the motive of the false accusation: "She says she made it up as a way to deflect her parents’ anger when they caught her surfing pornographic sites on the Internet." Avoiding punishment or embarrassment of some kind are common motives for false accusations.

Sometimes, feminist or other writers will moan about inordinate attention paid to the wrongly accused -- they have the peculiar notion that even talking about the wrongly accused detracts from the problem of sexual assaults. Here's one of a hundred instances I can name where there's too damn little attention paid to the wrongly accused -- where is the outrage over an innocent man rotting away behind bars? Thank heavens for the Washington Post!

my question is whether the slow wheels are a result of Virginia having private for-profit prisons. Isn't the state contractually obligated to maintain a certain minimum capacity?

This is both a triumph and a tragedy. That it's receiving media coverage is great, because it clearly demonstrates the danger of wrongful conviction when an accuser's word can be taken as proof, without any evidence - but the state's handling of the case is outrageous.

What we're seeing here is that an individual can be imprisoned without evidence of guilt, but can't be freed from that imprisonment in light of clear proof of innocence and a vacated verdict.

Temporarily, he's being treated as guilty even after proven innocent. Besides the obvious (conviction should not be able to occur in the absence of proof,) if this is really an issue with state law as the attorney general says, then state law needs to be amended to handle this type of situation. An innocent person (who should never have been in there in the first place) should not continue to be imprisoned after his innocence has been proved, and his false accuser charged.

Notice once again, how CASUALLY she falsely accused this man, knowing he could possibly be put away in prison for as long as 20 years. That's the part that always shocks me even more.. is how these females so CASUALLY falsely accuse someone of rape or sexual assault.

We can discuss all day how easy it is to convict someone on these accusations, but no one ever seems to address this issue. I mean, it's obvious that females are being taught or raised in some way in this country that we have no clear idea of. Or something in our culture.

We have though established the top 4 reasons for false accusations and this was one of them- 'getting out of trouble.' The others are revenge, profit, & attention. There should be exhaustive research into this clearly female-centric pathology.
