I'd only offer two points of caution in making this comparison.

First, "due to time already served, Tahir could be released in September next year." The judge may well have simply wanted Tahir to serve additional time beyond her sentencing, thereby giving him a longer sentence than she otherwise would.

Second, the article about Tahir does not indicate whether he pleaded guilty, as Jian Chen did. Pleading guilty almost invariably gets you a shorter sentence than you would otherwise receive, and it may have been the case that Tahir didn't choose to do so.

Manslaughter seems more apt than usual.

To be fair it wasn't just a severed tongue; he smashed her eye socket with a broken bottle as well, and he's eligible for parole after a 1/3 of the sentence.

Of course the woman got a 25% reduction for the guilty plea, implying at most she would have gotten 5.3 years.

8 and a half years seems like a low sentence for mutilating someone that horribly. He shouldn't be eligible for parole.

Obviously it is fucking insane that anyone serves 4 years for murder.

I cannot understand how people view these things. People go to jail for decades for much less. This guy cut out a woman's tongue. He should rot in jail. I mean even actually raping someone is not as serious as permanently disfiguring them. How can you ever recover from something like your tongue being cut out. Obviously I think the murders should be in jail for decades.
