The only reason these cultures are "misogynist" is, much like all cultures have not freed men from gender roles, these cultures are the ones which haven't freed women either.

I have only anecdotical evidence, but in Russia masculinity is extremely important, which hurts both genders. Men are supposed to pay for everything, and provide for their family, while the women have to do everything to look good. It's like a caricature of our Western system. I wouldn't want to be a man in Russia.

Also, the article outlawing homosexuality in the Soviet Union explicitly forbade only sex between men. (Sorry, I only have a Russian link)

The examples you bring up can be extrapolated to most of the third world.

Rape laws are typically gendered, most of them don't recognise male victimisation and none that I know of acknowledges female perpetration.

Afghanistan has super strict islamic laws, but other islamic countries abide by the same laws, rules and customs. Women have a right to be provided for, all her income belongs to her, whereas the income of the husband belongs to the family and she has a claim on it.

Does UAE really punish rape victims or do they have unreasonably high standards of proof for rape and punish extramarital sex?

As a rule, if women are oppressed out getting raped, men are dying or pretty much enslaved. I'm not a sociologist but it seems to hold true.

I saw a documentary a few months back about these women who were taken from a small bedouin community in Syria (I think it was - it would have been filmed before the war) to participate in a program in India which trained women to be entrepreneurs in selling solar equipment. It seemed to me that whereas the men were made to believe that they were supposed to be in control, it was the grandmother who was really calling the shots, and was telling the woman's husband to voice disapproval to the wife on her behalf. In this sense, the man was just a political tool. Generally, in the community, the men seemed to kind of attach themselves as peripheral to the extended family. They really never had a place there... and they were kind of outsiders.
