It seems that a huge amount of the current research into gender and education indicates that gender separation in the class room is ultimately the best overall course of action. I know that if I ever have a son, I will very, very seriously consider sending him to an all-male school.

I know I found myself excluded from the classroom as a young kid, i was always really energetic, i always was interested in nitsch stuff from outside class and tried to tie it into class, because if not I got bored just sitting in class listening to something unrelated to my interests. I was scolded and molded into seeing this behavior as bad, one cannot ask questions as to why one might study a problem and its relevancy because you take away time from the class and one should shut up and listen, in English classes were all about how you feel about a piece of writing and the novels we read all about emotional struggles. That was middle school and first couple years of HS. Really put me off english and right brained things. I stuck to math, then i had this atrocious female math teacher, decided that adding more grade importance to turning in busy work on time was a good way to level out her class, where the guys and few girls dominated the class, that way the dominating people who got the right answer but really did not understand why they needed to do the busy work didnt do their work on time but aced test would be equal to the slowpokes(mostly women) who did their work but still didnt do it right.

Then junior year it all changed, new staff came in, a male math teacher and English teacher came in. The math department stratified the classes more, allowing for students who exceled to go to a higher level of math and reduced the busy work and in English, it was about rationlization, constructung theories about what the text was constructed to mean and how it was constructed. I loved it really felt more comfortable, the compelling feeling to ask questions and challenge ideas re-surged in me, it was acceptable and appropriate. Male role models are needed, male methods of learning such as the need to understand why we are doing something (i think its more so than women), ad also the need for a competitive environment, where each group of guys competes with one another for better grades and reputation. I dunno if this was just horribly written. probably was. Just a quick rant. sorry

you know what will happen. If the boys out-perform girls in any way, then women will cry "discrimination" and demand that girls be admitted.

Or if any girl feels discriminated.

After all, we are past the age of all male country clubs /s

Studies have shown single sex classrooms out perform co-ed for years. Fantastic that parents and children of both sexes are given the choice. Good for the school district.

While I support the optional separation of gender in classrooms, I think it's important to have a shared recess because of the recent study that both men and women prefer the company of women.
