Non-toxic masculinity

The term non-toxic masculinity is another way of trying to define what a man should strive to be. Everyone is going to have different views. In my opinion, it starts with being a good person. But then we start arguing about whether or not it’s a man’s job to provide for his family, or if that is up to both parents, etc.

Unfortunately, I think this discussion will see a lot of perspectives, but will not come to a solution.

Your post seems to be well intentioned but I refuse to talk about "toxic masculinity" without talking about "toxic femininity", likewise "positive masculinity" without "positive femininity."

Talking about one without the other is pure hate speech and bigotry.

I may get flack for saying this but I think it’s soldiers & vets. Not because they are the ones who are toxic but because of what we do to them and the way we present them.

We train men to kill and to fight but we don’t train them how to come back from that, I’m struggling to find the words but essentially un-train then. we put them in an environment of life or death, then bring them back home and just expect them to just return to normal. To me that’s an absolute fucking tragedy.

In front of old city hall in Downtown Toronto there is a war memorial that says “to our glorious dead” if my memory serves. I may be biased or reading into it to much (I’m not afraid to be wrong) but that’s sounds like something from starship troopers like “service guarantees citizenship”. your noble if you die for the cause. put your life on the line for society, it’ll be worth it but you won’t be around to enjoy it. I don’t like the idea that it’s men’s obligation to protect their society and I think it sends a message of you are disposable if we need you to be.

Also I think the message of the noble warrior we send out to our young children and youth sends the message of disposability. I see all the little kids wearing captain America or iron man shirts and I think it tells that they need to strive to be a super hero, and super hero’s put their lives on the line and survive in the stories but we are just human.

Now I want to say that this is just the way I see it. I may not be right but it just my opinion. I don’t think these men are toxic I think what we do to them is.

Men have a unique obligation to risk their health to help others.

No one would shame a woman for not running in to a fire or active shooting situation to save a man.

This sort of self sacrifice for others is positive, albeit harmful to men.

Feminists today are fine with it (notice how not a single one has complained more men than women die rescuing strangers). They just don't want men to get any praise for this sacrifice: so the fact that only men died on 9/11 attempting to rescue trapped office workers is fine. But it's offensive if the statue in their memory doesn't contain 50% women.

Honour (yeah thats right americanos I used the dreaded U) is definitely a strong one.

Another vital one is caring for yourself and others.

Be careful using that term (toxic masculinity) here though, a lot of people dislike it.
